Android phones include a feature called Adaptive Battery that uses artificial intelligence to learn which apps you use throughout the day and which ones sit idle. Apps you rarely open are restricted from running in the background, which conserves battery power for the apps you actually care about.
Adaptive Battery is turned on by default on most Android phones running Android 9 or newer. You generally do not need to do anything to benefit from it — but understanding how it works helps you troubleshoot situations where an app stops updating in the background.
For example, if you use an email app but Adaptive Battery notices you never open it between midnight and 7 AM, it may stop that app from fetching new messages during those hours. When you wake up and open the app, it syncs and shows your new messages — but there may be a short delay.
If you notice that a specific app is not sending you notifications or updating properly, Adaptive Battery might be restricting it. You can check which apps are restricted and remove important apps from the restriction list.
The feature also works alongside Battery Saver mode (which you turn on manually when battery is low) and Adaptive Charging (which slows charging overnight to protect battery health). Together, these features meaningfully extend the lifespan of your battery over months and years.
