    1

    Open Gboard settings

    ~27s
Tap on any text field in any app to open the keyboard. Look at the row above the keyboard — you may see a gear icon on the far left. Tap it to open Gboard settings. If you do not see a gear icon, tap the three-dot menu icon and look for "Settings" in the menu that appears.

    Quick Tip

You can also reach Gboard settings through your phone's Settings app: Settings > General Management > Keyboard list and default > Gboard > Gboard settings.

    2

Add a word to your personal dictionary

    ~21s
In Gboard settings, tap "Dictionary" then "Personal dictionary." Tap "All languages" (or your specific language). Tap the "+" button in the top-right corner. Type the word you want to add — for example a person's name or a medical term. You can also add a shortcut in the field below if you want. Tap the checkmark or back arrow to save.
    3

    Change autocorrect strength

    ~15s
In Gboard settings, tap "Text correction." Find "Autocorrect" and tap it. A menu appears with options: "Off," "Modest," or "Aggressive." Choose "Modest" if you want autocorrect to only fix clear mistakes, or "Off" to stop automatic corrections entirely. Tap your choice to save.
    4

    Undo a wrong autocorrect

    ~26s
When Gboard changes a word and you want the original back, look at the word suggestion bar above the keyboard — your original typed word often appears there. Tap it to switch back. You can also tap the Backspace key once immediately after an autocorrect to undo it and restore what you typed.

    Quick Tip

If Gboard keeps changing the same word even after you undo it, add the word to your personal dictionary (step 2) to permanently stop the correction.

Gboard is Google's keyboard app that comes pre-installed on most Android phones. Like iPhone's keyboard, it uses autocorrect to fix spelling mistakes as you type. And like iPhone's, it sometimes gets words wrong — especially names, slang, technical terms, or words that are not in its standard dictionary.

Android gives you a personal dictionary where you can add any words you want the keyboard to accept without changing them.

    How autocorrect works on Gboard

Gboard watches what you type and compares each word to its dictionary. If a word is not recognized, it may replace it with the closest match — sometimes right, sometimes wrong. It also learns from your typing over time, picking up words you use often.

    The personal dictionary

The personal dictionary is where you save words that Gboard does not know. Adding a word there tells the keyboard "this is a real word, stop changing it." You can also add shortcuts — short codes that expand into longer phrases when you type them.

    Accessing Gboard settings

You can reach Gboard's settings by opening any app with a text field, tapping to bring up the keyboard, and then tapping the gear icon that appears in the top row of the keyboard. From there, go to "Dictionary" to manage your personal word list.

    Autocorrect strength

Gboard lets you choose how aggressively it corrects. In Gboard settings, go to "Text correction" and find "Autocorrect." You can set it to "Off," "Modest," or "Aggressive." Modest means it only corrects clear mistakes; Aggressive means it corrects more freely, including unusual words it thinks might be wrong.

Quick Tip: If Gboard keeps changing a specific word every time, long-press the word after autocorrect changes it. You may see an option to "Add to dictionary" — tap it to prevent the correction from happening again.
