Android phones use lithium-ion batteries — the same technology found in iPhones, laptops, and electric cars. These batteries are very capable. But they do degrade over time. How quickly they degrade depends a lot on how you charge and use the phone.
A common misconception is that you should let your phone battery drain completely to zero before charging. This was true for older types of batteries decades ago. But it is actually harmful to modern lithium-ion batteries. Deep discharges (going to 0%) put stress on the battery chemistry. Frequent full discharges accelerate aging.
A better approach is to plug in your phone when the battery reaches around 20 to 25% and unplug or stop charging around 80 to 85% if possible. This range is sometimes called the "sweet spot" for lithium-ion batteries. Of course, in everyday life you cannot always hit those exact numbers, and sometimes charging to 100% is fine — the goal is avoiding deep discharges and long periods sitting at 100% as a regular habit.
Many newer Android phones have built-in features to help with this. Samsung phones running recent versions of One UI have a "Protect Battery" setting (sometimes called "Charging limit") that stops charging at 85% automatically. Google Pixel phones have "Adaptive Charging" that slows the charging rate overnight similar to Apple's Optimized Battery Charging. Check your phone's battery settings to see what options are available.
Heat is the most serious threat to battery health on any device. Using your phone heavily while charging (especially gaming or video calls) generates significant heat. Using fast chargers constantly when slow charging would be enough also generates more heat. Whenever practical, charging at a slower rate produces less heat and is gentler on the battery long-term.
After two to three years of normal use, most Android phone batteries will hold noticeably less charge than when new. Most phone manufacturers and many third-party repair shops can replace the battery for a reasonable cost, which can make an older phone feel a lot newer.
