    1

    Download and open Sketchbook

    ~36s
Search for "Autodesk Sketchbook" in the App Store, Google Play, or Microsoft Store, or download the desktop version at sketchbook.com. The app is free — no account is required to use it, though creating one lets you sync projects across devices. Open the app and tap or click the plus (+) button to create a new canvas. Choose a preset size or enter custom dimensions. For most sketching, a square canvas of 2000 x 2000 pixels works well.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: If you plan to print your artwork, choose a canvas size of at least 3000 x 3000 pixels at 300 DPI (dots per inch). You can find DPI settings in the Custom canvas option.

    2

    Get to know the interface

    ~30s
Sketchbook's interface is minimal by design — it keeps tools out of the way so the canvas is as large as possible. A small toolbar called the Copic Library sits on one side, and a radial menu appears when you press and hold the screen. On tablets and desktops, a more complete toolbar runs along the top or side. The layer panel opens from the stacked squares icon. Take five minutes to tap every icon once and read the tooltip that appears — this gives you a map of where everything is.
    3

Try the symmetry tool for easy practice

    ~27s
One of Sketchbook's most useful tools for beginners is the symmetry guide. Tap the ruler icon and select "Symmetry." A line appears across the canvas. Now draw on one side — the app mirrors your strokes to the other side in real time. This makes it much easier to draw faces, animals, butterflies, mandalas, and any other symmetrical subject. Experiment with horizontal, vertical, and diagonal symmetry axes until you find one that works for what you want to draw.
    4

Use layers to build your drawing

    ~40s
Tap the layer panel icon to open it. Add a new layer by tapping the plus (+) button. Use the bottom layer for rough sketches and add detail layers on top. When your rough sketch is done, reduce the opacity of the sketch layer by tapping it and adjusting the opacity slider — setting it to around 30% makes the sketch faint so you can trace over it cleanly on a new layer. This is the standard digital drawing workflow used by professional illustrators.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Name your layers by tapping the layer name and typing a label — "sketch," "linework," "color," "shading." Named layers are much easier to manage than a stack of layers all called "Layer 1," "Layer 2," and so on.

    5

    Export your finished drawing

    ~28s
When your drawing is complete, go to the Share or Export menu (the arrow icon or File menu on desktop). Choose PNG for the highest quality image with a transparent background, or JPEG for a flat image with a white background. PNG is better for artwork you plan to share or print. Save the file to your device's photo library, camera roll, or a folder on your computer. From there you can attach it to an email, post it on social media, or have it printed.

Autodesk Sketchbook is a professional-grade drawing application that is completely free to use — no subscription, no hidden fees, no limited version. The full app with all of its tools is available on iPad, iPhone, Android phones and tablets, Windows, and Mac. This cross-platform availability means you can start a sketch on your phone during a commute and continue it on your computer at home.

Sketchbook was originally developed by Autodesk, the company behind AutoCAD and Maya, and was used by professional concept artists and industrial designers. Autodesk later made it free and open source, and it is now maintained by a dedicated team. The quality of its brushes and tools is genuinely high — comparable to paid alternatives that cost much more.

The app includes more than 190 brushes covering pencils, inks, markers, watercolors, oils, and airbrush. You can adjust size, opacity, and spacing for every brush. The layer system supports up to 128 layers per canvas depending on your device's memory. A perspective guide tool helps you draw accurate three-point perspective without needing to measure manually.

Sketchbook is well suited for anyone who wants to sketch ideas, practice drawing, create concept art, or illustrate stories. It works equally well with a stylus or your finger. On iPad with Apple Pencil, or on a Surface with its stylus, pressure sensitivity gives your strokes a natural feel.

The app is available at sketchbook.com and through the App Store, Google Play, and Microsoft Store. The official Autodesk Sketchbook YouTube channel has tutorial videos for beginners and more advanced techniques.
