    1

Download ibis Paint X and create a new canvas

    ~37s
Search for "ibis Paint X" in the App Store or Google Play and install it. Open the app and tap "My Gallery" at the bottom. Then tap the plus (+) button to create a new canvas. Choose a canvas size — 2000 x 2000 pixels at 72 DPI is a good starting point for digital sharing. If you plan to print, choose 300 DPI. The canvas opens with a single white layer. You are ready to draw.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: If you plan to do character illustration or comic-style art, try a 2480 x 3508 pixel canvas — this is standard A4 paper size at 300 DPI and works well for detailed artwork.

    2

    Browse and select a brush

    ~30s
Tap the brush icon on the right side of the screen to open the brush panel. The brushes are organized into categories — Pencil, Pen, Airbrush, Watercolor, Oilcolor, Marker, and more. Tap any category to expand it and see the brushes inside. Tap a brush name to select it. The size and opacity sliders at the left and bottom of the screen let you adjust how the brush behaves. Try a few different brushes on the canvas to feel the difference between them before you commit to one for a drawing.
    3

Draw a rough sketch using the Pencil brush

    ~41s
Select a light gray color from the color wheel (tap the circle at the top of the left panel to open the color picker) and choose a pencil brush. Draw your initial sketch loosely. At this stage, accuracy matters less than capturing the basic shapes and proportions of what you want to draw. Use broad strokes for the overall structure before adding any detail. Keep the opacity of your sketch layer around 50% — this makes it easier to draw cleaner lines on top later.

    Warning

Avoid drawing everything on a single layer. Putting your sketch, lines, and colors on separate layers lets you fix mistakes on one without erasing everything else. Adding a new layer takes only a second and saves you much more time later.

    4

Add a lineart layer on top

    ~41s
Tap the layers icon (stacked squares) to open the layer panel. Tap the plus (+) to add a new layer above your sketch. Select a black or dark color and choose a smooth pen brush like "Mapping Pen" or "G Pen." Trace over your sketch with cleaner, more deliberate lines on this new layer. When your linework is complete, return to the layer panel and reduce the opacity of the sketch layer to zero (hide it completely) to see only your clean lines.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Use ibis Paint's ruler tool — accessible from the toolbar — to draw perfectly straight lines, curves, and ellipses. Tap the ruler icon, choose your shape type, and drag on the canvas to set the ruler's position. Then draw along it with any brush.

    5

Color your drawing and export it

    ~27s
Add another new layer below your linework layer. Use the fill tool (a paint bucket icon) to fill in flat color areas. Add additional layers above the flat color layer for shading and highlights. When the artwork is finished, tap the wrench or settings icon and find the Export option. Choose PNG for the best quality. Save it to your device's photo library. From there you can share it to Instagram, send it in a message, or store it in a cloud folder.

ibis Paint X is a free drawing and illustration app for iPhone and Android that has become especially popular among manga artists, anime illustrators, and digital artists who want professional tools without spending money. The app has been downloaded more than 300 million times worldwide, and an active community of users share tutorials and completed artwork directly within the app.

The app includes more than 10,000 brushes covering everything from pencils and pens to watercolors, oils, and specialty textures. New brushes can be downloaded from the community gallery inside the app. Layers, blending modes, clipping masks, and a ruler tool for straight lines and ellipses are all available. Pressure sensitivity works with Apple Pencil on iPhone and iPad, and with compatible Android styluses on Android devices.

One feature that makes ibis Paint X stand out for learners is its screen recording and community sharing system. Many artists post time-lapse videos of their drawings within the app, and you can watch them to see exactly how a drawing was built — stroke by stroke. This is a valuable way to learn techniques by watching other artists rather than reading instructions.

The free version of ibis Paint X is fully functional but includes ads and has a limited number of brushes available by default. Watching a short ad unlocks additional brushes temporarily. A paid "Prime" membership removes ads and unlocks all content permanently — but many users find the free version sufficient for regular use.

ibis Paint X is available at ibisinc.com, the App Store, and Google Play. The ibis Paint official YouTube channel also has tutorial videos in English covering common techniques.
