    How to Clear an App's Cache on Android

    Clearing cached data can fix slow apps, login issues, and crashes on Android — without deleting your personal data or account information.

    Open Settings and go to Apps

    Open the Settings app (gear icon). Scroll down and tap "Apps" or "Applications." On Samsung phones, this section may also be called "Apps." You'll see a full list of all apps installed on your phone.

    Find the app you want to fix

    Scroll through the list to find the app that's slow, crashing, or having issues. Tap on it to open its App Info screen. This page shows you storage usage, permissions, and action buttons for that specific app.

    Tap the search icon at the top of the Apps list to search by app name instead of scrolling through the entire list.

    Tap Storage (or Storage & Cache)

    On the App Info screen, tap "Storage" or "Storage & Cache." This takes you to a screen showing how much storage the app's main data and cache are using. You'll see two separate numbers: Storage (your actual data) and Cache (temporary files).

    Tap Clear Cache

    Tap the "Clear Cache" button. On most phones, this happens right away without a confirmation dialog — the cache size drops to 0 KB right away. That's normal and expected. You're only deleting temporary files.

    Warning

    Do NOT tap "Clear Data" or "Clear Storage" unless you're prepared to log back into the app. Clear Data deletes your login and all locally saved preferences, while Clear Cache only removes temporary files.

    Reopen the app and test

    Press the back button or the home button to leave Settings. Find the app and open it normally. It may take a moment to load the first time since it needs to rebuild its cache. Check whether the slow behavior, crashes, or login issue has been resolved.

    Quick Tip

    Clearing the cache of your web browser (Chrome, Samsung Internet, Firefox) can greatly speed up web browsing and fix pages that won't load properly.

    Every app on your Android phone builds up a collection of temporary files as you use it. These files — called the cache — help the app load faster by storing things it uses often, like images, settings, and login tokens. Most of the time, the cache is helpful. But over time it can become outdated or corrupted, which leads to slow behavior, freezing, login failures, or apps that crash when you open them.

    Clearing the cache deletes these temporary files. The app then rebuilds the cache from scratch the next time you use it. This often fixes: - Apps that are slow or laggy - Apps that keep crashing or freezing - Login problems (where the app says you're logged out even when you're not) - Display issues (like images that won't load or menus that look wrong) - Apps taking up much more storage than they should

    What clearing the cache does NOT do:

    Clearing the cache does not delete your account, your messages, your photos, or your saved data within the app. Your Gmail emails will still be there. Your Facebook friends list stays. Your Amazon order history is untouched. The cache only contains temporary data the app uses for speed — not your actual content.

    What about "Clear Data"?

    On the same App Info screen, you'll also see a button called "Clear Data" or "Clear Storage." This is different and more powerful. It deletes all your saved data for the app, including your login information, preferences, and any content stored locally. Use Clear Data only as a last resort, because you'll need to log back in to the app afterward.

    For most troubleshooting, clearing the cache is all you need.

    How often should you clear the cache?

    There's no need to clear caches on a regular schedule. Clear an app's cache when that app is giving you trouble — not as a weekly routine. The cache rebuilds automatically as you use the app, so clearing it unnecessarily means the app has to load things from scratch, which actually makes it slower at first.

    Cache size can grow large:

    Some apps accumulate hundreds of megabytes of cache over months of use. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and web browsers are especially prone to this. If your phone is running low on storage space (you'll see a warning in Settings > Storage), clearing the caches of your most-used apps is one of the quickest ways to free up room without deleting anything important.
