Costco Pharmacy is well known for offering some of the lowest prescription drug prices in the country. What surprises many people is that you do not need a Costco membership to use the pharmacy — under most state laws, pharmacy services must be accessible to non-members. You can walk in to any Costco pharmacy counter and fill a prescription even without a membership card.
Costco's prescription prices are particularly competitive for common generic medications. Generics are drugs that contain the same active ingredient as their brand-name counterparts but are sold at much lower prices because the original patent has expired. Many medications commonly taken for chronic conditions — blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, thyroid — are available as generics and can cost just a few dollars per month at Costco.
Costco also has an online pharmacy available at costco.com/pharmacy. You can use the online system to transfer existing prescriptions from another pharmacy, request new prescriptions, and order refills for pickup at your local Costco. There is no membership fee to use the online pharmacy either. You need to create a free Costco.com account, but membership is not required.
To find prices before transferring a prescription, use Costco's Drug Information Center at costco.com/pharmacy to search for a medication by name and see the current price for a 30-day or 90-day supply. Comparing this price to what you currently pay can help you decide whether switching makes sense. Costco pharmacists are available by phone at your local warehouse to answer questions about your medications.
