How to Digitize and Restore Old Photographs

Preserve your precious memories — scan old prints, fix faded colors, and store them safely in the cloud.

    1

    Scan photos with your phone

    ~18s
Download "Google PhotoScan" (free) from your app store. Open the app and position your phone over the photo. The app guides you to capture the photo from multiple angles, which removes glare and produces a flat, professional-looking scan. It works much better than just taking a regular photo of a photo.
    2

Use a flatbed scanner for best quality

    ~20s
If you have a flatbed scanner (or know someone who does), place photos face-down on the glass. Scan at 300 DPI (dots per inch) for prints, or 600 DPI for small photos you'll want to enlarge. Save as JPEG for sharing or TIFF for maximum quality. Clean the scanner glass with a microfiber cloth before scanning.
    3

    Fix faded or damaged photos

    ~22s
Google Photos has a free "Enhance" button that automatically improves brightness, contrast, and color. For more serious restoration (torn photos, missing sections, severe fading), try apps like "Remini" (uses AI to sharpen faces) or "MyHeritage Photo Enhancer" (free for basic use). These AI tools can dramatically improve old, blurry photos.

    Quick Tip

Remini and MyHeritage can also colorize black-and-white photos automatically — the results are often surprisingly good.

    4

Organize and back up your scans

    ~20s
Create a folder called "Family Photos" in Google Photos, iCloud Photos, or your preferred cloud storage. Organize by decade or event. Add descriptions while you remember them — who's in the photo, when it was taken, and where. This information becomes invaluable for future generations. Cloud storage ensures your digital copies survive even if your computer fails.
    5

    Share with family

    ~18s
Use Google Photos "Shared Albums" or Apple's "Shared Albums" to create a family photo collection that everyone can view and add to. Share the link with family members by email or text. They can view, download, and add their own scanned photos. It's a wonderful way to bring family memories together in one place.
