How to Set Up and Use an ecobee Smart Thermostat

An ecobee smart thermostat learns your schedule, adjusts temperature automatically, and can save 23% on heating and cooling costs. Here's how to set it up.

    1

    Check compatibility first

    ~18s
ecobee works with most central forced-air heating and cooling systems. Go to ecobee.com/compatibility and enter information about your current thermostat's wiring. If you see the "C-wire" (common wire) is required and you don't have one, ecobee includes a Power Extender Kit (PEK) that works around this — most modern ecobee packages include it.
    2

Turn off power at the breaker

    ~22s
Before touching the thermostat wiring, find your home's circuit breaker panel and turn off the breaker for your HVAC system (usually labeled "Furnace," "Heating," "AC," or "HVAC"). Confirm the thermostat goes dark to confirm power is off. Safety first.

    Warning

Always turn off power to your HVAC system at the breaker before installing or removing any thermostat. Working on live wires can damage your equipment or cause injury.

    3

Remove old thermostat and connect wires

    ~19s
Remove the old thermostat from the wall. Take a photo of the wiring before disconnecting anything — this is your reference. Each wire connects to a letter-labeled terminal (R, G, Y, W, C, etc.). Connect the same wires to the matching terminals on the ecobee's mounting plate. The ecobee installation guide provides a clear diagram.
    4

Attach the ecobee and power on

    ~15s
Press the ecobee onto its mounting plate until it clicks. Restore power at the breaker. The ecobee screen illuminates and guides you through setup: selecting your language, Wi-Fi network, and whether you have heating only, cooling only, or both.
    5

Complete setup in the ecobee app

    ~31s
Download the free ecobee app on your phone. Sign in or create an account. The app walks you through: confirming your equipment type, setting up your schedule (when you're home, away, asleep), and enabling SmartHome/Away (it uses sensors to detect occupancy and adjust temperature automatically). Within a week, the ecobee learns your patterns.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Enable "Follow Me" mode — ecobee comes with a remote sensor you place in another room. The thermostat uses it to heat/cool based on where you actually are in the house, not just the hallway where the main thermostat sits.

An ecobee is one of the most popular smart thermostats alongside Nest. It replaces your existing thermostat and connects to your home Wi-Fi so you can control your heat and air conditioning from your phone — from anywhere — and set up smart schedules that automatically save energy when you're away or asleep.

ecobee thermostats average 23% savings on heating and cooling costs according to the company. The payback period for the ~$200 device is typically 1–2 years for households that previously had manual or basic programmable thermostats.

This guide covers the setup process. Note: replacing a thermostat involves turning off power at your circuit breaker and handling low-voltage wiring. Many people do it themselves, but if you're uncomfortable with this, a handyman or HVAC technician can install it for $50–$100.
