Set Up an ecobee Smart Thermostat with Room Sensors

If your home has one room that always runs cold in winter or hot in summer — usually a back bedroom or a room above a garage — an ecobee thermostat is the single best fix short of replacing ductwork. What makes ecobee different from other smart thermostats is its wireless SmartSensors. You place small disc-shaped sensors in the rooms that matter to you, and ecobee averages the temperature across those sensors instead of reacting only to the hallway where most thermostats live.

The installation process is similar to a Nest. You turn off power at the breaker, label the wires on your old thermostat, mount ecobee's base plate, and connect each wire to a matching terminal. Ecobee includes a Power Extender Kit for homes without a C-wire — worth mentioning because not every brand does. Once mounted, ecobee walks you through Wi-Fi setup, HVAC settings, and pairing SmartSensors.

The real payoff is placing the sensors thoughtfully. Put one in the bedroom you sleep in, one in the living room where you spend evenings, and keep one in a often used spot like the kitchen. Then build ecobee's comfort profiles — Home, Away, and Sleep — and assign which sensors matter during each. The Follow Me feature tells the system to prioritize whichever sensor has detected recent motion. So it chases comfort to wherever you actually are.

Ecobee models also include a built-in Alexa speaker, intercom, and integration with utility rebate programs called eco+. Many power companies give $50 to $125 back for enrolling.
