The Google Nest Learning Thermostat is one of the most popular smart thermostats in the United States, and for good reason. It studies the temperatures you set over the first week or two, then builds a schedule automatically so your home stays comfortable without you touching a dial every day. It can also drop into Eco Mode when you leave the house, which often shaves 10 to 15 percent off heating and cooling bills.
Before you buy one, the most important thing to check is whether your home's HVAC wiring is compatible. Nest needs a steady trickle of power, and that usually comes from a wire called the C-wire (common wire). If your old thermostat does not have a C-wire, Nest can sometimes work without it, but in other cases you will need an adapter or a small amount of help from an HVAC technician. Google has a free online compatibility checker where you enter the wires you see behind your current thermostat.
Installation itself takes about 30 to 45 minutes. You will turn off power at the breaker, take a photo of your existing wiring, label each wire with the included stickers, mount Nest's base plate, and slot the wires into the spring-loaded terminals. After you restore power, the Nest walks you through setup on its round screen, you pair it with the Google Home app on your phone, and it starts learning. Within a couple weeks it should have built a schedule that matches your life — warmer mornings, cooler nights, energy savings when you're away.
