How to Set Up a Google Nest Learning Thermostat

Check your HVAC compatibility

Safely remove the old thermostat

With the breaker still off, unscrew the old thermostat's face plate from the wall. Carefully pull the wires forward and use the small stickers that come with Nest to label each wire by terminal (R, C, W, and so on). Loosen the terminal screws and pull each wire free. If the wires try to slip back into the wall, wrap them around a pencil to hold them in place.

Mount the Nest base and connect wires

Hold Nest's base plate flat on the wall, level it with the built-in bubble level, and mark the mounting holes with a pencil. Screw the base into the wall using the included anchors. Press each labeled wire into its matching terminal — the spring clamp will hold it in place. Snap the round Nest display onto the base until you hear a click.

Run first-time setup

Turn the breaker back on. Nest's screen will light up and guide you through language, Wi-Fi, ZIP code, and HVAC type. Turn the outer ring to scroll and press the display to select. When it asks, scan the QR code on the back of the device with the Google Home app to link it to your account. Setup takes about 10 minutes total.

Let the learning feature do its work

Use the thermostat normally for the first 1 to 2 weeks — bump the temperature up when you're cold, down when you're warm. Nest watches these changes and builds a personalized schedule. After that, turn on Home/Away Assist in the Google Home app so it drops to Eco Mode when your phone leaves the house, and turn on Seasonal Savings for automatic small adjustments that add up over a year.
