    Electric Vehicle Charging Basics

Understand EV charging levels, find public chargers, and learn about home charging options.

    1

    Charging levels

    ~15s
Level 1: Regular wall outlet (120V). Very slow — 3-5 miles of range per hour. Level 2: 240V outlet (like a dryer). 25-30 miles per hour. Level 3 (DC Fast): Commercial chargers. 100-200+ miles in 30 minutes.
    2

    Home charging

    ~15s
Most EV owners charge at home overnight. Level 1 works if you drive less than 40 miles daily. Level 2 is recommended: hire an electrician to install a 240V outlet and buy a Level 2 charger ($300-600). Many utilities offer EV charging rates.
    3

    Find public chargers

    ~15s
Use the PlugShare app or built-in navigation in your EV. ChargePoint, EVgo, and Tesla Supercharger are the largest networks. Most EV dashboards show nearby chargers when your battery is low.
    4

    Charging costs

    ~15s
Home charging costs about $10-15 to fully charge (about 3-4 cents per mile). Public Level 3 charging costs more: $10-25 for a fast charge. Still much cheaper than gasoline for most drivers.
    5

    Battery care tips

    ~15s
Don't charge to 100% daily — 80% is ideal for battery longevity. Avoid frequent DC fast charging when possible. Keep the battery between 20% and 80% for best long-term health.
    6

    Tax incentives

    ~15s
Federal tax credit: up to $7,500 for new EVs, $4,000 for used. Many states offer additional incentives. Some utility companies offer rebates for home charger installation. Check fueleconomy.gov/feg/taxevb.shtml.
