How to Set Up and Use Face ID on iPhone

Face ID lets you unlock your iPhone, approve purchases, and log into apps just by looking at it — no passcode typing needed. Here's how to set it up.

    1

    Open Face ID settings

    ~15s
Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode. Enter your current passcode when prompted. You'll see the Face ID setup screen.
    2

    Set up Face ID

    ~27s
Tap "Set Up Face ID." Hold your phone at normal viewing distance — about 10–20 inches from your face. A circle appears on screen. Slowly move your head in a circular motion, as if tracing the edge of the circle with your nose, to scan your face from different angles. You'll do this twice (two scans for thoroughness).

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: If you have limited head mobility, tap "Accessibility Options" during setup to use a stationary scan that doesn't require moving your head.

    3

Unlock your iPhone with Face ID

    ~20s
Press the side button to wake your phone. Look at the screen. The lock icon at the top changes from locked to unlocked — you'll see a small animation. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to go to the Home screen. Face ID happens in the moment you glance at it — almost imperceptibly fast.
    4

Use Face ID for App Store and payments

    ~16s
When you go to buy an app or make an Apple Pay purchase, your phone will ask for Face ID confirmation. A prompt appears — just look at your phone and it approves. No more typing your Apple ID password for every purchase.
    5

    Add an alternate appearance

    ~24s
If you want another person to be able to unlock your iPhone (a spouse, adult child, caregiver), go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Set Up an Alternate Appearance. That person follows the same scanning process. Your face and their face will both unlock the phone.

    Warning

Only add an alternate appearance for someone you fully trust — they will have the same access to your phone, apps, and payment methods as you.

Face ID is the facial recognition feature on iPhones that don't have a Home button (iPhone X and later). Instead of entering a passcode every time, you just look at your phone — it recognizes your face instantly and unlocks. Face ID also approves App Store purchases, authenticates Apple Pay, and auto-fills passwords.

Face ID is secure: Apple says the chance of a random person's face unlocking your iPhone is approximately 1 in 1,000,000 (compared to 1 in 50,000 for a fingerprint). It works in the dark, with glasses or sunglasses on, and adapts to changes in your appearance over time.

Setup takes about two minutes and only needs to be done once. You can also add an "alternate appearance" (like a family member's face) if you want someone else to be able to unlock your phone.
