How to Free Up Space on Your Android Phone

Running out of storage? Here are simple steps to clear space on your Android without losing important photos or apps.

    1

Check what is using your storage

    ~15s
Go to Settings > Storage (on Samsung: Settings > Device Care > Storage). You will see a bar graph and a breakdown showing how much space photos, apps, and other files are using. Start by identifying the biggest categories.
    2

Use Files by Google to clean up automatically

    ~19s
Open the Files app (pre-installed on most Android phones) or download "Files by Google" free from the Play Store. Tap "Clean" at the bottom. The app will find junk files, duplicate photos, and large unused files and walk you through deleting them safely.

    3

Back up photos and free up space with Google Photos

    ~28s
Open Google Photos and make sure backup is turned on (tap your profile photo > Photos Settings > Backup). Once your photos are safely backed up to Google's servers, tap your profile photo > "Free up space on this device" — this removes local copies from your phone while keeping them safe in Google Photos.

    Warning

Only free up space after you confirm your photos are fully backed up. Look for "Backup is on" and "X photos backed up" before tapping Free up space.

    4

    Clear app cache

    ~15s
Go to Settings > Apps. Tap any large app like Chrome, Facebook, or YouTube. Tap "Storage & Cache" and then "Clear Cache." This removes temporary files stored by that app. It does not delete your login information or personal data — just temporary junk.
    5

Delete files in your Downloads folder

    ~15s
Open the Files app and tap "Downloads." You will often find old documents, PDFs, or files you downloaded months ago and no longer need. Select them and delete. This folder is frequently full of forgotten downloads.
