Google Docs Basics: Free Online Document Editing

Create, edit, and share documents from any device using Google Docs — free, cloud-based, and easy to learn.

    1

    Open Google Docs

    ~17s
Go to docs.google.com in your web browser and sign in with your Google account (the same account you use for Gmail). Click the big "+" button or "Blank document" to create a new document. You can also open Google Docs from Google Drive (drive.google.com) by clicking "NewGoogle Docs."
    2

    Type and format your document

    ~17s
Click in the document and start typing. Use the toolbar to format: Bold (Ctrl+B), Italic (Ctrl+I), change font, size, and color. The toolbar is simpler than Word but has all the essentials. Use the paragraph styles dropdown ("Normal text") to add headings — great for organizing longer documents.
    3

    Your document saves automatically

    ~23s
Google Docs saves every change automatically to your Google Drive — you'll see "Saving..." then "All changes saved in Drive" at the top. You never need to click Save! If your internet cuts out, Docs will sync your changes when you reconnect. You can also access your documents from any device.

    Quick Tip

Google Docs works offline too! Enable it in Google Drive settings, and you can edit documents even without internet.

    4

    Share and collaborate

    ~19s
Click the blue "Share" button (top right). Type someone's email address. Choose their access level: Viewer (can only read), Commenter (can add comments), or Editor (can make changes). Click "Send." They'll get an email with a link to the document. Multiple people can edit the same document at the same time — you'll see their cursors in different colors.
    5

    Download and print

    ~17s
To download: FileDownload → choose a format (Microsoft Word, PDF, Plain Text, etc.). To print: FilePrint or press Ctrl+P. Google Docs can also convert your document to PDF for easy email sharing. Everything you create is stored in your Google Drive and accessible from any computer or phone.
