    Google Sheets for Beginners

Create spreadsheets, track budgets, and organize data with Google's free alternative to Excel.

    1

    Access Google Sheets

    ~15s
Go to sheets.google.com and sign in with your Google account. Click + (Blank) to create a new spreadsheet. Or use a template for budgets, schedules, and more.
    2

    Enter and format data

    ~15s
Click a cell and type. Press Tab to move right, Enter to move down. Format with the toolbar: bold, colors, number formats (currency, dates, percentages). Select multiple cells by clicking and dragging.
    3

    Basic formulas

    ~15s
=SUM(A1:A10) adds numbers. =AVERAGE(A1:A10) finds the average. =COUNT(A1:A10) counts entries. =MAX and =MIN find highest and lowest. Always start formulas with = (equals).
    4

    Sort and filter

    ~15s
Select your data, then Data > Create a Filter. Click the filter arrows in column headers to sort A-Z, Z-A, or filter to show specific values. Great for finding things in large lists.
    5

    Share and collaborate

    ~15s
Click Share (top-right). Add people by email. Choose "Editor" or "Viewer" access. Multiple people can edit simultaneously — you see their changes in real time with colored cursors.
    6

    Useful templates

    ~15s
sheets.google.com/templates offers: monthly budget, expense tracker, project timeline, to-do list, meal planner, and more. Start with a template and customize it for your needs.
    7

    Tips for better spreadsheets

    ~15s
Freeze the header row: View > Freeze > 1 Row. This keeps headers visible when scrolling. Use alternating colors: Format > Alternating Colors for easier reading. Name your sheets clearly (tabs at the bottom).
