When you call a tech support helper, your bank, your phone carrier, or even a family member, one of the first things they often ask is, "What kind of phone do you have, and what software is it running?" These two pieces of information help them give you steps that match what you actually see on your screen. iPhones look different from Android phones, and an iPhone running iOS 18 (the current 2026 release) looks different from one running iOS 13. Knowing both your model and your software version saves time and stops guessing.
The model is the type of phone, like "iPhone 14" or "Samsung Galaxy S23" or "Google Pixel 7." It is printed on the box you bought it in. But you do not need the box. Your phone knows its own model and shows it in the Settings app. The software version is the operating system, the program that runs everything else on the phone. On iPhone, the software is called iOS. On most Android phones, the software is called Android. And there may also be a brand layer such as Samsung's One UI or Google's Pixel software.
On iPhone, open Settings, tap General, then tap About. You will see Model Name (your phone model) and Software Version (your iOS version). Older iPhones may also show "Model Number" with a code that starts with the letter A, such as A2649. The Model Name is what you want to share. According to Apple Support, knowing your iOS version is the single most useful detail when troubleshooting a problem.
On Android, open Settings, scroll down to About phone (or About device), and tap it. You will see the model name (such as Galaxy S22 or Pixel 8). Tap Software Information or Android version to see the Android version (a number like 14) and the brand layer version. Samsung phones show One UI 6.1 and Android 14. Pixel phones show only Android 14.
If the Settings app feels confusing, you can also ask your phone's voice assistant. Say "Hey Siri, what model iPhone do I have?" or "Hey Google, what phone am I using?" The voice assistant will read it out. Either way, jot it on a sticky note and put it inside your phone case so you have it ready next time someone asks.
