When you first get an iPhone, Apple fills the home screen with dozens of apps — many of which you may never use. Over time, more apps accumulate and the screen becomes cluttered. Finding the app you need can feel like searching through a drawer stuffed full of items.
This guide walks through the steps to organize your iPhone home screen so it works the way you do: apps you use every day are right in front of you, rarely used apps are tucked away but still findable, and the screen is clean enough that nothing gets in your way.

Understanding the iPhone home screen layout
The iPhone home screen can have multiple pages — swipe left to move to the next page. At the very bottom of the screen is a permanent bar called the **dock**, which holds up to 4 apps that stay visible no matter which home screen page you are on.
Below the home screen pages is the **App Library** — a special section that automatically organizes every app on your phone into categories. To reach it, swipe left past all your home screen pages until you see a screen with neatly sorted app folders.
---
How to move an app
Press and hold (long-press) any app icon on the home screen. After about one second, the apps will start wiggling — this is called "jiggle mode" and it means your home screen is ready to be rearranged.
While apps are wiggling: - **Drag an app** by pressing and holding it, then sliding your finger to a new location on the same page, or drag it to the left or right edge of the screen to move it to a different page. - **Move an app to the dock** at the bottom — drag it down to the dock area. If there are already 4 apps there, you will need to move one out first. - **Tap Done** in the upper-right corner (or press the Home button on older iPhones) when you are finished rearranging.
---
How to create a folder
Folders let you group related apps together to reduce clutter. For example, you might put all your health apps in one folder or all your family communication apps in another.
Step 1 — Start jiggle mode
Press and hold any app until everything starts to wiggle.
Step 2 — Drag one app on top of another
While apps are wiggling, drag one app directly on top of another app you want to group it with. When a dark background circle appears around both icons, let go. A folder is created automatically.
Step 3 — Name the folder
The folder opens with a suggested name (iPhone guesses based on the app category). Tap the name field at the top of the folder to edit it. Type a name that makes sense to you — "Health Apps," "Family," "Shopping," "Games," or whatever fits. Tap Done.
Step 4 — Add more apps to the folder
While still in jiggle mode, drag any other app and drop it onto the folder to add it. Tap Done when finished.
To open a folder later, tap it once. All the apps inside are shown. And you tap the one you want.
---
How to remove apps you never use
Press and hold any app until jiggle mode starts. Tap the small **X** or **minus (–)** button that appears in the upper-left corner of the app you want to remove. A menu will appear with two options:
- **"Remove from Home Screen"** — this removes the app icon from the home screen but keeps the app installed on your phone. It will be available in the App Library. Choose this when you do not use the app often but want to keep it.
- **"Delete App"** — this removes the app from your phone entirely. Choose this for apps you no longer want at all.
Apple's built-in apps (Phone, Messages, Safari, Camera, Settings) cannot be deleted — only removed from the home screen.
---
Using the App Library
The App Library is located after all your home screen pages. Swipe left past every page until you reach it. You will see apps organized automatically into categories like "Social," "Entertainment," "Utilities," and "Recently Added."
At the top of the App Library is a search bar. If you are looking for an app and cannot remember where you put it, type its name in the App Library search bar to find it instantly.
Moving an app from the App Library back to your home screen: 1. Find the app in the App Library. 2. Press and hold it until a menu appears. 3. Tap "Add to Home Screen."

How to add widgets to your home screen
Widgets are live information panels — larger than a regular app icon — that display useful information at a glance without you needing to open an app. Common useful widgets for everyday use:
- **Weather** — shows the current temperature and forecast
- **Calendar** — shows today's date and your next event
- **Clock** — shows the current time in large digits
- **Battery** — shows the battery level of your iPhone and any connected accessories
To add a widget:
- 1Press and hold an empty area of the home screen (not on an app) until jiggle mode starts.
- 2Tap the **+** button in the upper-left corner of the screen.
- 3A widget gallery will open. Scroll through or search for a widget by name.
- 4Tap a widget to see the available sizes (small, medium, or large).
- 5Tap **"Add Widget"** to place it on the home screen.
- 6In jiggle mode, drag the widget to the position you want.
- 7Tap Done.

How to make app icons appear larger
If the standard app icons look small on your screen, you can turn on Display Zoom — a setting that makes everything on the screen slightly larger, including app icons, text, and the keyboard.
Step 1 — Open Settings
Tap the **Settings** app (the gray gear icon).
Step 2 — Tap "Display & Brightness"
Scroll down and tap **"Display & Brightness."**
Step 3 — Tap "Display Zoom"
Under the View section, tap **"Display Zoom."**
Step 4 — Select "Larger Text"
You will see two options: "Default" and "Larger Text." Tap **"Larger Text"** and then tap **"Set."** Your iPhone will restart briefly to apply the change.
With Display Zoom on, every element of the screen — app icons, text, buttons — is displayed at a larger size. This setting does not change the way your phone works. It only makes the screen easier to read.
---
Recommended dock setup
The dock at the bottom of the screen holds 4 apps that you want available no matter which page you are on. Because this is premium screen real estate, put your 4 most-used apps here.
Common choices for seniors and frequent users: - **Phone** — for making and receiving calls - **Messages** — for texting family and friends - **Safari** — for browsing the web - **Camera** or **FaceTime** — depending on which you use more
To move an app into the dock: enter jiggle mode and drag the app down to the dock area. Drag out any current dock app you want to replace first.

Quick Tips for a cleaner home screen
- Keep page 1 of your home screen to 8–12 apps maximum — the ones you use every single day. Everything else can go on page 2 or in a folder.
- Group related apps into folders rather than spreading them across many pages. Four to five well-named folders can replace three or four crowded pages.
- If you have not opened an app in six months, remove it from your home screen. It will still be in the App Library if you ever need it again.
- Use the App Library search bar whenever you cannot remember where an app is. It is faster than scrolling through every page.
