Open the Settings app and tap Screen Time

    ~15s
Find the gray Settings icon on your home screen and tap it. Scroll down and tap Screen Time. This is the home base for all Screen Time features.
    2

    Turn on Screen Time

    ~15s
Tap Turn On Screen Time at the top of the screen. A brief explanation will appear. Tap Continue. You will be asked if this iPhone belongs to you or a child. Tap This is My iPhone to set it up for yourself.
    3

    Review your usage report

    ~19s
Once Screen Time is on, come back to the Screen Time page after using your phone for a day or two. At the top, you will see a summary showing your daily average time on the phone, broken down by app category. Tap See All Activity to get a more detailed breakdown of each individual app.
    4

Set a limit for a specific app or category

    ~24s
From the Screen Time settings page, tap App Limits, then tap Add Limit. You will see a list of categories like Social Networking, Entertainment, and Productivity. Tap a category to select it — or tap the arrow next to a category to choose a specific app inside it. Then tap Next and use the time wheel to set how long you want to allow each day. Tap Add when done.
    5

Set up Downtime if you want phone-free hours

    ~18s
Back on the Screen Time page, tap Downtime. Toggle it on. Set a start and end time — for example, 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM. During Downtime, only phone calls and apps you specifically allow will be available. This is helpful for keeping the phone from disrupting sleep or family time.
    6

Optionally set a Screen Time passcode

    ~23s
If you want the limits to be harder to override, go back to Screen Time settings and tap Use Screen Time Passcode. Choose a four-digit code that is different from your phone's unlock code. With a passcode set, overriding a limit will require entering this code. Without a passcode, you can tap Ignore Limit to keep using the app — useful if you want reminders rather than hard blocks.

Do you ever pick up your phone to check one thing and then look up to find that an hour has passed? Many people find it helpful to set limits on how long they spend on certain apps each day. Apple's built-in Screen Time feature makes this straightforward.

Screen Time is free and built right into every iPhone running iOS 17 or newer (most iPhones made in the last several years). It shows you a weekly report of how much time you spend in each app and lets you set daily time limits that can help you take a break when you want to.

What Screen Time can do for you

    • Show you a weekly report of how long you spend on each app and category
    • Let you set a daily time limit for specific apps or groups of apps (like Social Networking or Entertainment)
    • Allow you to schedule Downtime — hours when only certain apps are available, such as overnight
    • Let parents set limits for children on a Family Sharing plan

    A note on the passcode

When you set app limits, your iPhone will ask if you want to set a Screen Time passcode. This is optional. If you set one, you will need to enter it to override a limit when the time runs out. If you are setting limits for yourself and want them to be more of a soft reminder than a hard block, you can skip the passcode — the phone will still show a warning when you reach your limit. And you can choose to ignore it or extend the time.

This is a tool, not a punishment

Screen Time is a wellness feature. Think of it as a gentle tap on the shoulder that says, "You have been on this app for a while." Many people find that seeing the usage report is enough to help them make more intentional choices about how they spend their time.

    Quick Tip:

The Screen Time report resets every Sunday at midnight, so the best time to review your weekly usage is on a Sunday before it resets.
