iOS 18 is a significant update for iPhone that Apple released in September 2024. If your iPhone runs iOS 18 (iPhone XR and newer can get it), you may have already updated — but you might not know about all the changes.
Here are the most useful things that changed:
Customizable Home Screen
: For the first time, you can place app icons anywhere on your home screen — not just in a grid starting from the top-left. You can also tint all your app icons to match a color scheme, or make them dark.
Improved Control Center
: The panel you access by swiping down from the top-right corner now has multiple pages and is fully customizable. You can add, remove, and rearrange controls.
RCS Messaging
: When you send a text to an Android phone, it now uses RCS (a newer standard) instead of old SMS, giving you read receipts, better photo quality, and typing indicators — even in cross-platform conversations.
Scheduled Messages
: You can write a text message and schedule it to send at a specific time — useful for birthday wishes or reminders when the other person might be sleeping.
Lock Screen App Icons
: You can now put any two apps directly on your lock screen for quick access without unlocking first.
Photos App Redesign
: The Photos app was completely reorganized with automatic categorization — Recent Days, People, Pets, Trips, and more. Some people love it; others preferred the old layout (you can switch back).
