    1

Check that you have iOS 18

    ~15s
Go to SettingsGeneralAbout → look at "iOS Version." If it shows 18.x, you have it. If not, go to SettingsGeneralSoftware Update to update. iOS 18 works on iPhone XR, XS, and all newer models.
    2

    Customize your home screen layout

    ~23s
Press and hold any blank spot on your home screen until the icons wiggle. Now you can drag icons anywhere on the screen — including the bottom half, leaving open space on top. Tap "Edit" at the top to also change your wallpaper or add widgets.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Tap "Edit" → "Customize" to change all your icons to dark or tinted colors if you prefer a more unified look.

    3

    Customize Control Center

    ~17s
Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center. Press and hold any blank area to enter edit mode. Tap the "-" to remove controls you never use. Tap "Add a Control" at the bottom to add new ones — things like Text Size, Voice Memos, Notes, or Shazam music recognition.
    4

    Schedule a text message

    ~18s
Open Messages and start a new message or open an existing conversation. Type your message, then press and hold the blue send button (instead of just tapping it). A menu appears — tap "Send Later" and choose a date and time. Your message will send automatically at that time, even if the app is closed.
    5

    Use the updated Photos app

    ~19s
Open Photos. The new layout shows "Recent Days" at the top and scrolls through organized collections below. Swipe down to find categories like People & Pets, Trips, and Media Types. If you preferred the old All Photos grid, tap "All Photos" at the top of the library view to return to the classic scrollable grid.

iOS 18 is a significant update for iPhone that Apple released in September 2024. If your iPhone runs iOS 18 (iPhone XR and newer can get it), you may have already updated — but you might not know about all the changes.

Here are the most useful things that changed:

    Customizable Home Screen

: For the first time, you can place app icons anywhere on your home screen — not just in a grid starting from the top-left. You can also tint all your app icons to match a color scheme, or make them dark.

    Improved Control Center

: The panel you access by swiping down from the top-right corner now has multiple pages and is fully customizable. You can add, remove, and rearrange controls.

    RCS Messaging

: When you send a text to an Android phone, it now uses RCS (a newer standard) instead of old SMS, giving you read receipts, better photo quality, and typing indicators — even in cross-platform conversations.

    Scheduled Messages

: You can write a text message and schedule it to send at a specific time — useful for birthday wishes or reminders when the other person might be sleeping.

    Lock Screen App Icons

: You can now put any two apps directly on your lock screen for quick access without unlocking first.

    Photos App Redesign

: The Photos app was completely reorganized with automatic categorization — Recent Days, People, Pets, Trips, and more. Some people love it; others preferred the old layout (you can switch back).
