Understanding iPhone Volume Controls: Ringtone, Media, and Alarm
iPhone has separate volume settings for ringtones, media (music and video), and alarms — and they do not all adjust with the same buttons. Here is how to control each one.

Quick Tip: Turn on "Change with Buttons" in SettingsSounds & Haptics if you want the side buttons to always control ringer volume regardless of what is playing.

The Mute Switch (silent mode) does NOT mute alarms. Alarms always play at the volume set in Sounds & Haptics, even in silent mode. This is by design. If you want a completely silent night, set the alarm volume low or use the "Bedtime" feature in Health/Clock which has its own gentle alarm.

iPhone actually has separate volume levels for different things — and this surprises many people who wonder why their phone still rings loudly even though they turned down the music volume.
There are three main volume categories: Ringer and Alerts (the volume of incoming calls, texts, and app notifications), Media Volume (music, videos, podcasts, and game sounds), and Alarm Volume (the Clock app alarm).
The physical side buttons (Volume Up and Volume Down on the left side of the iPhone) control different things depending on what is happening. If music or a video is playing, they control Media Volume. If nothing is playing, they control Ringer and Alerts volume.
The Mute Switch — the small toggle above the volume buttons — silences ringtones and alerts (orange side = muted). But it does NOT silence alarms. Your Clock alarm will ring even when the mute switch is in the muted position. This is intentional — so you always wake up even if you forgot to unmute.
Alarm volume is separate and set through the Clock app, not through the side buttons.
