Understanding iPhone Volume Controls: Ringtone, Media, and Alarm

iPhone has separate volume settings for ringtones, media (music and video), and alarms — and they do not all adjust with the same buttons. Here is how to control each one.

    1

    Adjust Ringtone Volume

    ~25s
When your phone is idle (no music playing): press the side Volume Up or Volume Down buttons. The ringer volume bar appears on screen. Adjust to your preferred level. Or go to SettingsSounds & HapticsRinger and Alerts slider. Drag left for quieter, right for louder.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Turn on "Change with Buttons" in SettingsSounds & Haptics if you want the side buttons to always control ringer volume regardless of what is playing.

    2

    Adjust Media Volume

    ~18s
While music or a video is playing, press the Volume Up or Volume Down buttons — they now control Media Volume. You can also drag the volume slider in the music player or video player on screen. Media volume is separate from ringer volume, so you can have loud music but a quiet ringtone.
    3

    Adjust Alarm Volume

    ~34s
Alarm volume in the Clock app does not respond to the volume buttons — it has its own setting. Go to SettingsSounds & Haptics. Look for the "Ringer and Alerts" slider at the top. This controls both ringtone AND alarm volume in the same setting. Drag it to set how loud alarms will be.

    Warning

The Mute Switch (silent mode) does NOT mute alarms. Alarms always play at the volume set in Sounds & Haptics, even in silent mode. This is by design. If you want a completely silent night, set the alarm volume low or use the "Bedtime" feature in Health/Clock which has its own gentle alarm.

    4

    Use the Mute Switch

    ~17s
The small physical switch above the volume buttons on the left side silences all ringtones and notification sounds. Flick it toward the back of the phone (orange line shows) to mute. Flick it forward to unmute. A brief ringer tone plays when you unmute, confirming the current volume level.
    5

Set "Do Not Disturb" to Silence Everything

    ~19s
For complete silence including calls (but still allowing alarms): swipe down from the top-right of your screen → tap the moon icon to enable Do Not Disturb or Focus mode. This silences calls and notifications but lets alarms through. You can also allow calls from starred contacts to ring even in Do Not Disturb.

iPhone actually has separate volume levels for different things — and this surprises many people who wonder why their phone still rings loudly even though they turned down the music volume.

There are three main volume categories: Ringer and Alerts (the volume of incoming calls, texts, and app notifications), Media Volume (music, videos, podcasts, and game sounds), and Alarm Volume (the Clock app alarm).

The physical side buttons (Volume Up and Volume Down on the left side of the iPhone) control different things depending on what is happening. If music or a video is playing, they control Media Volume. If nothing is playing, they control Ringer and Alerts volume.

The Mute Switch — the small toggle above the volume buttons — silences ringtones and alerts (orange side = muted). But it does NOT silence alarms. Your Clock alarm will ring even when the mute switch is in the muted position. This is intentional — so you always wake up even if you forgot to unmute.

Alarm volume is separate and set through the Clock app, not through the side buttons.
