    1

Turn off the circuit breaker before touching any wires

    ~42s
Locate your home's electrical panel (often called the fuse box or breaker panel — it is a gray or black metal box, typically in a basement, garage, utility room, or hallway). Find the breaker labeled for the room or circuit where your switch is located and flip it to the OFF position. Go back to the switch and try it — the light should not turn on. Use a non-contact voltage tester (available at hardware stores for under $20) near the switch to double-check there is no electricity flowing before you remove any wires.

    Warning

Never work on a light switch with the power on. Electrical wiring carries 120 volts — enough to cause a serious injury. Always verify the power is off with a voltage tester before touching any wires.

    2

Remove the old switch and note the wiring

    ~31s
Remove the switch's cover plate by unscrewing the single center screw. Then remove the two screws holding the switch itself to the electrical box inside the wall. Gently pull the switch out — you will see wires connected to it. Most standard switches have a black wire (hot — carries electricity), a white wire (neutral — completes the circuit), and a bare copper or green wire (ground — a safety wire). The Caséta dimmer requires a neutral wire; check that a white wire is present. Take a photo of the wiring before disconnecting anything.
    3

    Install the Caséta dimmer

    ~27s
Caséta dimmers come with clear wiring instructions in the box and include color-coded wires to connect to your home's wiring. Connect matching wire colors using the wire nuts (the small plastic caps) provided — black to black, white to white, ground to ground. The Caséta dimmer's green wire connects to your bare copper ground wire. Once all connections are made, fold the wires carefully back into the box and screw the dimmer into place. Attach the cover plate and restore power at the breaker.
    4

Set up the Smart Bridge and Lutron app

    ~40s
Plug the Caséta Smart Bridge into your router using the included Ethernet cable and into a wall outlet for power. Its LED light will turn green when it is connected to the internet. Download the "Lutron Caséta" app from the App Store or Google Play and create a free account. Open the app and follow the instructions to find and add your Smart Bridge. Once the Bridge is connected, tap "Add Device" in the app and follow the pairing steps for your dimmer switch.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: After adding the switch to the app, create a "Room" and assign the switch to it — this makes voice control more intuitive. You can say "Turn off the bedroom" instead of naming a specific switch.

    5

Mount the Pico remote in a convenient location

    ~28s
The Pico remote comes with a small mounting bracket and a piece of double-sided tape. Choose a location — perhaps the nightstand, a wall across the room from the switch, or a secondary entry door — and attach the bracket. Press the remote into the bracket. In the Lutron app, go to your switch and select "Pico Remote" to pair the remote to the dimmer. The Pico controls the dimmer just like the wall switch and its battery lasts up to 10 years.
    6

Integrate with Apple HomeKit, Alexa, or Google Home

    ~30s
In the Lutron app, go to "Integrations" or "Works With" in the settings menu. Tap "Apple HomeKit" and scan the HomeKit code printed on the Smart Bridge using your iPhone's camera — your Caséta switches will appear in the Apple Home app. For Alexa, open the Alexa app, add a new device, and search for "Lutron Caséta" — log into your Lutron account to link them. For Google Home, open the Google Home app, tap "+" then "Set up device" then "Works with Google" and search for Lutron.

Lutron Caséta is widely considered the most reliable smart dimmer switch system available for home use. While smart bulbs like Kasa or Philips Hue replace the bulb itself, Caséta replaces the light switch on the wall. This approach has a significant advantage: any bulb in the fixture — LED, halogen, or fluorescent — works correctly, and you never have to worry about someone turning the switch off and disconnecting the smart bulb from power.

Lutron has been manufacturing lighting controls since the 1960s and is known in the professional electrician world for quality. The Caséta line brings that reliability to the consumer market at a moderate price. A single dimmer switch costs around $60 to $75, which is more than a smart bulb, but covers every light in that fixture permanently.

Every Caséta dimmer comes with a Pico wireless remote — a small battery-powered button panel that can be mounted anywhere: beside a bed, on the other side of a room, or near an entrance where there is no switch. This is particularly useful in rooms where you wish you had a light switch in a different location.

For full smart home integration — phone control from anywhere, voice control, schedules — you need the Caséta Smart Bridge, a small device that plugs into your router. Without the Bridge, Caséta dimmers work as regular (non-smart) dimmers controlled only at the switch or with the Pico remote. The Bridge costs around $80 and is sold separately, though many starter kits include it bundled with a switch.

Installing a Caséta dimmer involves working with your home's electrical wiring — which is safe if you follow the steps carefully, but requires turning off the circuit breaker and working with caution. If you are not comfortable with this, consider hiring an electrician for the installation.
