    1

Install the bulb and prepare the app

    ~39s
Make sure the light switch controlling the socket you want to use is in the ON position before screwing in the smart bulb — the bulb needs constant power to stay connected to Wi-Fi. Screw the Kasa bulb into the socket. Download the "Kasa Smart" app from the App Store or Google Play and create a free TP-Link account using your email address. Keep your home Wi-Fi password nearby because you will need to enter it during setup.

    Warning

Never put a smart bulb on a circuit controlled by a dimmer switch unless the bulb is specifically labeled as dimmer-compatible. Using a standard smart bulb on a dimmer switch can damage the bulb or cause it to flicker and behave unpredictably.

    2

Add the bulb to the Kasa app

    ~31s
Open the Kasa app and tap the "+" button to add a new device. Select "Lighting" and then your specific bulb model from the list. The app will instruct you to make sure the bulb is powered on — it should be glowing already. The bulb broadcasts its own temporary Wi-Fi signal during setup. Follow the on-screen prompts: the app will connect your phone to the bulb temporarily, then ask you to enter your home Wi-Fi name and password so the bulb can connect permanently. The bulb will blink when the connection is complete.
    3

Name the bulb and adjust brightness or color

    ~43s
After the bulb is added to the app, tap on it and give it a descriptive name — "Bedroom Lamp," "Kitchen Ceiling," or "Living Room Left" all work well. Use the brightness slider on the bulb's control screen to set the light level from 1% to 100%. If you have a color bulb, you will see a color wheel — tap anywhere on it to select a color, or use the "White Light" tab to choose the warmth of white light from cool and energizing to warm and relaxing.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: A warm white light (around 2700K — K stands for Kelvin, a measure of color temperature) is easier on the eyes in the evening and can help with sleep. A cooler white light (5000K) is better for tasks like reading or working.

    4

    Create a schedule

    ~27s
In the Kasa app, open your bulb's settings and tap "Schedule." Tap "Add Schedule" and choose a time and days of the week for the bulb to turn on or off. You can set the schedule to repeat daily, only on weekdays, or on specific days. One popular setup: schedule the bulb to turn on at sunset (Kasa can automatically calculate local sunset time) and off at 11:00 PM. This way your lights manage themselves without you needing to touch the app or a switch.
    5

Control with Alexa or Google Home

    ~29s
To use Alexa, open the Alexa app, go to "Devices," tap the "+" and select "Add Device," then search for "Kasa." Follow the prompts to link your TP-Link account. Once linked, Alexa discovers all your Kasa bulbs and adds them to your device list. You can then say "Alexa, turn off the bedroom lamp" or "Alexa, dim the living room to 30%." The process is similar for Google Home — open the Google Home app, tap "+" then "Set up device" then "Works with Google" and search for Kasa.

TP-Link Kasa makes some of the most popular smart light bulbs available in the US, and one big reason is that they do not require a separate hub device. Many competing smart bulbs — including some Philips Hue products — need you to purchase and plug in a central hub before the bulbs work. Kasa bulbs connect directly to your existing home Wi-Fi network, which means you screw in the bulb, download a free app, and you are ready to go.

Kasa makes several types of smart bulbs. The basic models offer adjustable brightness and warm to cool white light. The color models (often called KL125 or similar) also let you choose from millions of colors — red, green, blue, purple, or any custom shade. All models can be turned on and off remotely from your phone, set on a schedule, and controlled with Amazon Alexa or Google Home voice commands.

Kasa bulbs use standard screw-in bases (the same E26 base that most US floor lamps and ceiling fixtures use), so they fit in most household light sockets. They use LED technology, meaning they are more energy-efficient and last much longer than traditional bulbs.

The Kasa Smart app is free for iPhone and Android. You use it to control bulbs individually or group several bulbs together into a "Room" — so you can turn all the living room lights on at once with one tap instead of individually. The app also has a "Scenes" feature where you can save preset settings — for example, a warm dim setting called "Evening" that you activate with one tap.

This guide covers the full setup from screwing in the bulb to setting a daily schedule.
