Navigate files faster with these Finder features most Mac users don't know about.
1
Column view for navigation
~15sPress ⌘+3 for Column View in Finder. It shows nested folders side by side, making it easy to navigate deep folder structures and see where you are. Click folders on the left to drill down.
2
Quick Look
~15sSelect a file and press Space to preview it instantly. Works with photos, PDFs, videos, text files, and more. Press Space again to close. You can even edit images in Quick Look.
3
Tags for organization
~15sRight-click a file > Tags. Assign color-coded tags (Red, Orange, Blue, etc.) or custom labels. Find tagged files in the Finder sidebar. Tags work across folders — one file can have multiple tags.
4
Smart Folders
~15sFile > New Smart Folder. Create automatic folders that collect files matching criteria: all PDFs created this week, all images larger than 5 MB, all documents containing "tax." They update automatically.
5
Path bar
~15sView > Show Path Bar. A breadcrumb trail at the bottom of Finder shows exactly where you are. Double-click any folder in the path to jump to it. Drag files to the path bar to move them.
6
Batch rename
~15sSelect multiple files > Right-click > Rename. Choose Add Text, Replace Text, or Format. Rename hundreds of files at once (great for photos: "Vacation 2025 - 001, 002, 003...").
7
Go To Folder
~15sPress ⌘+Shift+G and type a path directly (like ~/Downloads or /Applications). Much faster than clicking through folders when you know where you're going.
