How to Troubleshoot Common Mac Problems

Fix slow performance, frozen apps, Wi-Fi issues, and other common Mac problems.

    1

    Force quit frozen apps

    ~15s
Press ++Esc to open Force Quit. Select the frozen app (it may say "Not Responding") and click Force Quit. This is the Mac equivalent of Task Manager on Windows.
    2

    Restart your Mac

    ~15s
Apple menu > Restart. If the Mac is frozen: hold the power button for 10 seconds until it turns off, then turn it back on. Restarting clears temporary files and resets processes.
    3

    Check Activity Monitor

    ~15s
Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor. Click the CPU tab and sort by % CPU to find resource-hungry processes. Click the Memory tab to see memory usage. Quit processes using 100%+ CPU that you don't recognize.
    4

    Free up storage

    ~15s
Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage > Manage. Use the recommendations: Store in iCloud, Optimize Storage, Empty Trash Automatically. Delete large files you no longer need. Macs slow dramatically when storage is nearly full.
    5

    Reset SMC (Intel Macs)

    ~15s
If fans run loud, battery doesn't charge, or sleep/wake has issues: shut down, hold Ctrl++Shift+Power for 10 seconds, release all keys, then turn on. (Apple Silicon Macs: just restart.)
    6

    Reset NVRAM/PRAM

    ~15s
If display, sound, or startup issues persist: shut down, press power, immediately hold ++P+R for 20 seconds. Release and let the Mac boot normally. (Apple Silicon: just restart.)
    7

    Safe Mode

    ~15s
Intel: restart, hold Shift. Apple Silicon: shut down, hold power button, select your disk, hold Shift, click Continue in Safe Mode. Safe Mode clears caches and checks the disk.
    8

    Reinstall macOS

    ~15s
Last resort. Restart, hold +R (Intel) or hold Power button (Apple Silicon). Choose Reinstall macOS. This reinstalls the system without erasing your files. Takes 30-60 minutes.
