    Windows Recovery Options Explained

Fix serious Windows problems using Safe Mode, System Restore, Reset, and Recovery Drive.

    1

    Safe Mode

    ~15s
Safe Mode starts Windows with minimal drivers and programs. Use it when Windows won't start normally or behaves erratically. Hold Shift while clicking Restart > Troubleshoot > Startup Settings > Safe Mode.
    2

    System Restore

    ~15s
System Restore returns Windows to a previous point in time without affecting your personal files. Search "Create a Restore Point" > System Restore > Choose a restore point from before the problem started.
    3

    Startup Repair

    ~15s
If Windows won't boot at all: when you see the manufacturer logo, hold the power button to force shutdown. Do this 3 times. Windows enters Automatic Repair. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced > Startup Repair.
    4

    Reset This PC (keep files)

    ~15s
Settings > System > Recovery > Reset This PC > Keep My Files. This reinstalls Windows while preserving your personal files. You'll need to reinstall programs. Takes 1-2 hours.
    5

    Reset This PC (remove everything)

    ~15s
Same path but choose "Remove Everything." This gives you a completely fresh Windows installation. Use this when selling your PC or if the keep-files option didn't fix the problem. Back up first.
    6

    Recovery Drive

    ~15s
Create a recovery USB drive before problems occur: search "Recovery Drive," use an 8+ GB USB stick. If Windows can't boot at all, plug in the recovery drive and boot from it to access repair tools.
    7

    When to try each option

    ~15s
Minor issues: Safe Mode + uninstall recent programs. Medium issues: System Restore. Serious issues: Reset (keep files). Last resort: Reset (remove everything). Won't boot at all: Recovery Drive or Startup Repair.
