How to Manage FileVault Encryption on Mac

Encrypt your entire Mac drive with FileVault to protect your data if your Mac is lost or stolen.

    1

    Open FileVault settings

    ~15s
Go to System SettingsPrivacy & SecurityFileVault.
    2

    Turn on FileVault

    ~15s
Click "Turn On" and choose how to unlock: iCloud account or a recovery key.

    Quick Tip

FileVault encryption happens in the background while you work. You will not notice any difference in speed on modern Macs.

    3

    Save your recovery key

    ~15s
If using a recovery key, write it down and store it in a secure location separate from your Mac.

    Warning

If you lose both your password and recovery key, your data is permanently inaccessible. Store the recovery key in a separate, secure location.

    4

    Wait for encryption

    ~15s
FileVault encrypts in the background while you work. It may take hours for a full drive.
    5

    Manage users

    ~15s
Each user must be enabled for FileVault to unlock the disk at startup.
