    Back up your data

    Use Time Machine or copy files to an external drive. A reinstall can erase everything.

    Enter macOS Recovery

    Restart and hold Cmd+R (Intel) or hold the power button (Apple Silicon) until recovery appears.

    Erase the drive (optional)

    Open Disk Utility from Recovery. Select your main drive and click Erase for a clean install.

    Quick Tip

    If you are selling or giving away your Mac, always erase the drive first. Choose "Erase" and select APFS format.

    Reinstall macOS

    Select "Reinstall macOS" and follow the prompts. This downloads a fresh copy from Apple's servers.

    After reinstall, go through the setup assistant. Restore from Time Machine backup if desired.
