How to Use Medicare.gov to Check Your Coverage

Medicare.gov helps you check your benefits, compare plans, find doctors, and manage your Medicare account online.

    1

    Go to Medicare.gov

    ~15s
Open your web browser and go to medicare.gov. This is the official government website for Medicare. Look for the blue and white design with the Medicare logo.

    Warning

Be careful of fake Medicare websites. The real site is always medicare.gov — never .com or .org.

    2

Log in or create an account

    ~15s
Click "Log in to your Medicare account." You can sign in with Login.gov or ID.me. If you do not have an account, click "Create an account" and follow the identity verification steps. You will need your Medicare card number.
    3

    Check what your plan covers

    ~15s
After logging in, click "Coverage" to see what services your Medicare plan includes. You can search for specific services like dental, vision, or physical therapy to see if they are covered and what your costs would be.
    4

    Find doctors who accept Medicare

    ~15s
Click "Find Providers" or visit medicare.gov/care-compare. Enter your zip code and the type of doctor you need. The tool shows which doctors near you accept Medicare and their quality ratings.
    5

Compare Medicare plans during Open Enrollment

    ~19s
During Open Enrollment (October 15 - December 7), click "Find a Plan" to compare Medicare Advantage and Part D drug plans in your area. Enter your medications to see which plans cover them at the lowest cost.

    Quick Tip

If this feels overwhelming, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). Free counselors can walk you through plan options over the phone.
