    1

    Purchase Microsoft 365 Family

    ~25s
Go to microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/family or visit a retailer like Costco, Best Buy, or Sam's Club where the subscription is sometimes sold at a discount. Click "Buy Now" on the Microsoft website. Sign in with your Microsoft account or create a free one using your email address. Complete the payment process to activate your subscription.

    Quick Tip

Costco often sells Microsoft 365 Family at a discounted price bundled with other offers. It is worth checking before buying directly from Microsoft.

    2

Install the Apps on Your Computer

    ~16s
Sign in at microsoft365.com with your Microsoft account. Click "Install apps" in the upper right corner and select "Microsoft 365 apps." The installer will download. Run it and follow the on-screen prompts. Installation typically takes 10 to 20 minutes depending on your internet speed.
    3

    Invite Family Members to Share

    ~27s
Sign in at account.microsoft.com and click "Microsoft 365" in the navigation. Look for a "Share" or "Add person" option. Enter the email address of the family member you want to invite. They will receive an email with instructions to accept the invitation and activate their included benefits on their own account.

    Warning

Each family member needs their own Microsoft account to accept the invitation. They do not share yours — each person gets their own separate account with their own 1 TB of storage.

    4

Install Apps on Phones and Tablets

    ~20s
Download the individual Microsoft apps from the App Store or Google Play — search for "Microsoft Word," "Microsoft Excel," or "Microsoft Office." Sign in with your Microsoft account to unlock the full editing features. The apps are free to download but require an active Microsoft 365 subscription for full functionality on phones and tablets larger than 10.1 inches.
    5

Set Up OneDrive for Automatic Backup

    ~24s
OneDrive may already be set up on Windows computers. Look for the OneDrive cloud icon in your taskbar (lower right on Windows, upper right on Mac). Sign in with your Microsoft account. Files saved to your OneDrive folder are automatically backed up to the cloud and accessible from any of your devices.

    Quick Tip

You can also access your OneDrive files from any web browser by going to onedrive.live.com — no installed app required.

Microsoft 365 Family (formerly called Office 365 Home) is a subscription that gives you access to Microsoft's most popular apps — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more — installed on up to five devices per person. One subscription covers up to six people in your household or family, each with their own separate account. The subscription also includes 1 terabyte of OneDrive cloud storage per person, which is a huge amount of space for documents, photos, and files.

At roughly $100 per year (as of 2026), Microsoft 365 Family works out to a very reasonable price when split among several family members. Compare that to buying the software outright, which used to cost hundreds of dollars and quickly became outdated. With a subscription, you always have the latest version.

The subscription is valuable even if you only need Word for writing letters, Excel for tracking finances, or Outlook for managing email. Having the full Microsoft Office apps installed means you can open, edit, and save documents in the formats that businesses, doctors' offices, government agencies, and schools use — which matters when someone sends you a form to fill out or a document to review.

OneDrive, the included cloud storage, works like a backup drive in the sky. Files you save to OneDrive are accessible from any device and are automatically backed up. If your computer stops working, your files are safe and retrievable.

Microsoft 365 Family requires a Microsoft account to set up and manage. If you have ever used Hotmail, Outlook.com, or Xbox, you already have a Microsoft account. New accounts are free to create.
