    1

    Open the Microsoft Store

    ~18s
Click the Start button and look for the Microsoft Store icon — it looks like a small shopping bag with the Windows logo. You can also click the Start button and type "Microsoft Store," then press Enter. The store opens in its own window with a home page showing featured apps and games.
    2

    Search for an app

    ~27s
Click the search bar at the top of the Microsoft Store window and type the name of the app you are looking for. Press Enter. Results appear showing apps and games matching your search. Look for the official version — check that the "Publisher" name matches the company you expect. For example, Netflix should be published by "Netflix, Inc."

    Warning

Be cautious about similarly named apps from unfamiliar publishers. If you are unsure, search the app name on the internet to confirm the publisher before downloading.

    3

    Download and install an app

    ~29s
Click on the app you want. The app's page shows screenshots, a description, ratings and reviews, and the system requirements. If the app is free, there is a "Get" or "Install" button. If it costs money, the button shows the price. Click the button, sign in with your Microsoft account if prompted, and the download starts automatically.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Read the reviews and check the star rating before installing an app. A high-quality app from a real company typically has many reviews and a rating above 4 stars.

    4

Find and open your installed app

    ~21s
After installation, a button saying "Open" appears on the app's page in the Store. You can also find the app in the Start menu by clicking the Start button and scrolling through the list of installed programs. To find it faster in the future, right-click the app in the Start menu and choose "Pin to Start" or "Pin to taskbar."
    5

    Update your apps

    ~24s
To manually check for updates, open the Microsoft Store and click the "Library" button in the bottom-left corner. Then click "Get updates" at the top-right. Available updates will download and install automatically. You can also let Windows handle this in the background — by default, apps update automatically when your computer is idle.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Keeping apps updated is important for security. Updates fix bugs and close vulnerabilities that hackers might try to use.

The Microsoft Store is the official app marketplace built into Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is the safest place to download apps and games for your Windows computer because Microsoft reviews apps before they appear in the store. This reduces the risk of accidentally downloading harmful software that could damage your computer or steal your information.

Think of the Microsoft Store like a vetted shopping mall — every store in it has been checked and approved to be there. Downloading apps from random websites, by contrast, is more like buying from a stranger on the street — you cannot always be sure what you are getting.

The Microsoft Store offers a wide range of applications: productivity tools like Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader, entertainment apps like Netflix and Spotify, games from Xbox Game Pass and independent developers, and utilities like VLC Media Player and various photo editors. Many apps are free; others have a one-time purchase price or a subscription.

When you install an app from the Microsoft Store, Windows automatically keeps it updated. You do not need to manually check for updates or download update files from websites — the Store handles this in the background. This is both convenient and safer, since updates often include security fixes.

The Microsoft Store requires a Microsoft account to download most apps. If you already use Outlook, OneDrive, or Teams, you have a Microsoft account. If not, you can create a free one at account.microsoft.com. For free apps, no payment information is required.
