    1

    Open Personalization settings

    ~17s
Right-click on an empty area of your desktop — an area with no icons or windows. A menu appears. Click "Personalize" at the bottom of the menu. This opens the Personalization section of Windows Settings directly. Alternatively, click the Start button, go to Settings, and choose "Personalization" from the left sidebar.
    2

    Choose or apply a theme

    ~25s
In Personalization settings, click "Themes." You will see several built-in themes displayed as thumbnail images. Click any theme to apply it immediately — your wallpaper, colors, sounds, and cursor style all change at once. To browse more free themes, click "Browse themes" to open the Microsoft Store's theme section.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Themes from the Microsoft Store are free and safe to download. They appear in your Themes list after installation, ready to apply with one click.

    3

    Change your wallpaper

    ~17s
In Personalization settings, click "Background." From the dropdown menu, choose "Picture" to set a single image, "Slideshow" to rotate through a folder of photos, or "Solid color" for a plain colored background. To use your own photo, click "Browse photos," navigate to your Pictures folder, and select the image you want.
    4

Switch between light and dark mode

    ~31s
In Personalization settings, click "Colors." At the top, you will see "Choose your mode" with options for Light, Dark, and Custom. Click "Dark" to switch Windows to dark mode. Many apps — including Microsoft Edge, File Explorer, and Settings itself — will switch to a darker color scheme. "Custom" lets you set Windows itself to dark mode while keeping individual apps in light mode, or vice versa.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: If you find dark text on a white background causes eye strain when reading for long periods, try dark mode and see whether it feels more comfortable.

    5

    Choose an accent color

    ~18s
Still in the "Colors" section, scroll down to see the accent color options. You can pick a color from the palette, or check the box for "Automatically pick an accent color from my background" and Windows will choose a color that complements your wallpaper. The accent color affects buttons, links, and highlighted items throughout Windows.

Personalizing your Windows 11 desktop is one of the most enjoyable ways to make your computer feel like your own. Windows 11 lets you change your desktop wallpaper (the background image), your color scheme, the sounds Windows makes, and your cursor style — all through the Personalization section in Settings.

A theme is a collection of these settings bundled together — one click applies a matching wallpaper, color, sounds, and cursor style all at once. Windows 11 comes with several built-in themes, and you can download many more for free from the Microsoft Store.

Your desktop wallpaper is the image you see behind all your open windows and icons. You can set it to one of the attractive images that come with Windows, a personal photo from your own collection, or a picture you find online. Windows can also rotate through multiple wallpapers on a schedule, showing a different image every 30 minutes, every day, or at another interval you choose.

Dark mode is a color setting that changes the background of Windows menus, Settings, and many apps from white to dark gray or black. Many people find dark mode easier on their eyes, especially in dimly lit rooms or during evening hours. You can switch between light and dark mode at any time.

Accent colors are the highlighted colors Windows uses for buttons, links, and selected items. You can choose from a palette of colors, or let Windows automatically pick a color that matches your current wallpaper.
