    1

Download OfferUp and create an account

    ~21s
Search for "OfferUp" in the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android) and install it — it is free. Open the app and tap "Sign Up." You can register with your email or link your Facebook or Google account. Add a profile photo and your first name — this helps buyers and sellers feel more comfortable transacting with you.
    2

    Post an item for sale

    ~31s
Tap the "+" or "Post" button at the bottom of the screen. Take or upload photos of your item — the more photos, the better. Add a title (be specific — "Black IKEA Billy bookcase, like new" is better than "bookcase"), a price, and a category. Write a short description noting the condition, dimensions, and any flaws. Tap "Post" when ready. Your item will appear to nearby buyers within minutes.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Tap "Promote" after posting to pay a small fee to have your listing shown higher in search results — this can help items sell faster.

    3

    Respond to messages

    ~27s
When a buyer is interested, they will send you a message through the app's chat feature. Respond promptly and answer their questions honestly. If they make an offer lower than your asking price, you can accept it, decline it, or counter with a different price. Once you both agree on a price and meetup time, confirm the details in the chat.

    Warning

Never share your phone number, home address, or financial information in the OfferUp chat. Keep all communication inside the app until you meet in person.

    4

Meet safely to complete the sale

    ~19s
When meeting a buyer or seller in person, choose a public location during daylight hours — OfferUp's Community MeetUp Spot feature can suggest a nearby safe location (often a police station lot). Bring a friend if possible. For large items like furniture that require a home pickup, have someone with you when the buyer arrives.
    5

    Leave a review

    ~17s
After completing a transaction, OfferUp will ask you to rate the other person. Honest reviews help the community stay safe. A high rating means other people will be more willing to transact with you, so good communication and following through on agreed prices leads to a better selling experience over time.

OfferUp is a free app that connects buyers and sellers in the same area. You can sell furniture, clothing, electronics, toys, tools, and almost anything else to someone who can come pick it up — no shipping required. You can also ship items nationwide if you prefer.

OfferUp was designed with safety in mind, and it is generally considered safer than older platforms like Craigslist. Every buyer and seller has a public profile with ratings and reviews, so you can see what others have said about someone before agreeing to meet them. OfferUp also partners with police departments across the country to designate "Community MeetUp Spots" — safe, public locations (often police station parking lots or well-lit public areas) where you can complete your transaction.

The app is free to download on iPhone and Android. Listing an item takes less than five minutes. You can post up to 100 photos of your item and add a price, description, and category. Buyers can make offers (hence the name), and you can accept, decline, or counter-offer.

OfferUp also has a "shipping" feature — if you want to sell to buyers outside your local area, you can ship items through OfferUp and get a prepaid label. OfferUp handles the transaction and holds payment until the buyer confirms receipt, similar to eBay's system.

Because transactions are mostly in person with cash or in-app payment, there are no listing fees and no selling percentages taken from local cash transactions. OfferUp only takes a fee if you use their in-app payment or shipping system.
