    1

Open Pixlr E in your browser

    ~33s
Open any modern web browser — Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari — and go to pixlr.com/editor. The Pixlr E interface loads directly in the browser. No login is required to start. You will see the main editing area (blank by default), the toolbar on the left, the Layers panel on the right, and the properties bar across the top. Click "Open Image" to import a photo from your computer, or drag a photo file directly into the browser window.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: For best performance, use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Pixlr E is most consistently fast and stable in these two browsers.

    2

    Make basic adjustments

    ~22s
Go to "Adjustment" in the top menu bar to access sliders for Brightness, Contrast, Vibrance, Saturation, and Hue. These controls work the same way as those in any desktop photo editor — move the slider and watch the photo update in real time. You can apply multiple adjustments without losing quality since Pixlr processes them in sequence. Go to Filter for additional creative options like Blur, Sharpen, and Vignette.
    3

Use the AI Cut-Out tool to remove the background

    ~28s
Click the "AI Cut-Out" button in the left toolbar (it shows a figure with a dashed outline). Pixlr analyzes your photo and automatically detects the main subject, separating it from the background. The background turns transparent (shown as a gray checkered pattern). You can refine the selection by painting over areas that were incorrectly included or excluded using the Brush and Eraser options in the tool panel. Once satisfied, add a new background color or image layer below the cut-out layer.
    4

    Heal and remove blemishes

    ~40s
Select the "Healing Brush" from the left toolbar (the bandage icon). Set the brush size using the slider at the top of the screen — smaller for precise spots, larger for broader areas. Click or drag over any spot, scratch, or unwanted element in the photo. Pixlr samples the surrounding area and fills in the selection with matching texture and color. The result is clean and accurate for most smooth backgrounds. For textured surfaces, make smaller selections and work gradually.

    Warning

The Healing Brush works best when you zoom in on the area you are fixing. Press Ctrl+Plus (+Plus on Mac) to zoom in and get precise control over your edits. Working at full zoom-out level makes it difficult to see what you are doing with small-scale repairs.

    5

    Save your edited photo

    ~28s
Go to File > Save at the top menu bar. Pixlr E gives you options: save as JPEG for a compressed photo suitable for sharing, PNG for a higher-quality image that supports transparency, or PXZ (the native Pixlr format) to save the project with all layers intact so you can continue editing later. Choose JPEG for most everyday uses. Adjust the quality slider — 85% quality is a good balance between file size and visual clarity. Click Download to save the file to your computer's Downloads folder.

Pixlr E is a free online photo editing tool that runs entirely in your web browser. You do not need to download any software, create an account, or pay anything to use the core editing tools. Open pixlr.com/editor, upload a photo, and you are editing. When you are done, save the file back to your computer.

This makes Pixlr E particularly useful if you are using a computer where you cannot install software — a public library computer, a work machine with restricted permissions, or a family member's laptop. Because it runs in the browser, it works on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chromebooks equally well.

Pixlr E's tools are modeled after professional desktop software. The interface includes a layers panel, a selection tool with multiple selection modes (rectangle, ellipse, lasso, and AI-powered object selection), an eraser, a crop tool, a text tool, and a healing brush for removing unwanted objects. These are not simplified versions of professional tools — they work the same way and produce the same quality of results.

Free accounts have access to most features. Pixlr Plus (a paid subscription) removes ads, unlocks additional AI tools, and provides access to a template library. The free version handles all the photo editing tasks most people regularly need.

Pixlr also offers Pixlr X, a more streamlined version of the same tool at pixlr.com/x, aimed at quick edits and social media graphics. Pixlr E is the more capable option for detailed photo editing work. Tutorials and documentation are available at pixlr.com/learn.
