Port Forwarding Explained in Plain Language

What port forwarding is, when you need it, and how to set it up on your router.

    1

    What is port forwarding?

    ~15s
Port forwarding tells your router to send specific internet traffic to a specific device on your network. Think of your router as a receptionist — port forwarding tells it "send gaming traffic to the PlayStation."
    2

    When you need it

    ~15s
Hosting a game server or Minecraft server. Running a home security camera accessible remotely. Hosting a website from home. Running remote desktop software. Most people never need port forwarding.
    3

    How to set it up

    ~15s
Log into your router (usually 192.168.1.1). Find Port Forwarding settings (under Advanced, NAT, or Firewall). Enter: the port number, the device's IP address, and the protocol (TCP, UDP, or both).
    4

    Find common port numbers

    ~15s
Minecraft: 25565. PlayStation: 3478-3480. Xbox: 3074. Web server: 80/443. Remote Desktop: 3389. Google "port forwarding [your game or app name]" for the specific ports needed.
    5

    Security warning

    ~15s
Port forwarding opens a door in your firewall. Only forward ports you actually need. Close them when you're done. Never forward ports for services you don't understand. Consider using a VPN as a safer alternative.
