How to Set Up Gmail on Your Phone

Access all your emails on the go by setting up Gmail (or any email account) on your smartphone.

    1

    Download the Gmail app

    ~15s
On an iPhone, open the App Store, search for "Gmail," and tap Get — it is free. On an Android phone, Gmail is usually already installed. If you do not see it, open the Play Store and search for "Gmail" to download it.
    2

Sign in with your Google account

    ~15s
Open the Gmail app. Tap "Sign in." Type your Gmail address (for example, yourname@gmail.com) and tap Next. Enter your password and tap Next again. Your emails will start loading within a minute.
    3

    Set up notifications

    ~19s
Gmail will ask if you want to receive notifications when new emails arrive. Tap "Allow" so you do not miss important messages. You can change this later in your phone's Settings app.

    Quick Tip

If you get too many notifications, you can set Gmail to only notify you about emails marked as important. Look in the Gmail app settings under Notifications.

    4

Read, reply, and write new emails

    ~16s
Tap any email to open it. To reply, tap the arrow pointing left at the bottom of the message. To forward, tap the arrow pointing right. To write a brand new email, tap the pencil icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.
    5

    Keep your inbox tidy

    ~15s
Swipe an email to the left to archive it — this hides it from your inbox but keeps it saved. Swipe right to mark it as read or unread. To select several emails at once, press and hold on one email, then tap the others.
