How to Set Up a Smart Doorbell — Ring and Nest

Install and set up a Ring or Nest video doorbell to see and talk to visitors from your phone, anywhere.

    1

Choose your doorbell and gather what you need

    ~15s
Ring and Nest video doorbells are available at Amazon, Best Buy, Home Depot, and Costco. Before installation, check whether your home has existing doorbell wiring (most US homes do). If not, choose a battery-powered model that does not require wiring.
    2

    Download the app before installing

    ~15s
Download the Ring app (for Ring devices) or the Google Home app (for Nest devices) on your smartphone before you start the hardware installation. Create an account with your email address.
    3

    Install the doorbell hardware

    ~17s
Follow the installation guide included in the box. For wired models, turn off the power to your doorbell at your circuit breaker before connecting any wires. Attach the mounting bracket, connect the wires, and snap the doorbell display onto the base. Turn the power back on at the breaker.
    4

Connect to WiFi through the app

    ~17s
Open the Ring or Google Home app and tap "Set up a device" or "Add device." The app will guide you through connecting the doorbell to your home WiFi network. Make sure you are on your 2.4 GHz WiFi network, as most doorbells work better on that frequency.
    5

    Adjust motion zones and alerts

    ~15s
In the app, go to the device settings and tap "Motion Settings." Set the motion zones to cover your driveway or walkway and exclude busy streets to reduce false alerts. Choose whether you want phone notifications for motion, doorbell presses, or both.
