How to Set Up a Smart Washer and Dryer

Get cycle-complete alerts on your phone, start loads remotely, and troubleshoot errors from an app with your Wi-Fi-connected washer and dryer.

    1

    Install the brand's app

    ~15s
Check your washer and dryer's owner manual or sticker for the app name. Download it from the App Store or Play Store and create an account with your email.
    2

    Start in pairing mode

    ~15s
On the washer or dryer's control panel, hold the Wi-Fi or Remote Start button for 3–5 seconds. A Wi-Fi symbol or light will blink to show it is ready to pair.
    3

Add the appliance in the app

    ~15s
In the app, tap the plus icon and pick Washer or Dryer. The app will ask for your Wi-Fi name and password — the machine needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, not 5 GHz.
    4

    Turn on Remote Start

    ~15s
Most washers require you to physically enable Remote Start each time for safety. Press the Remote Start or Smart Control button on the machine, then close the door and leave it there.
    5

    Set up notifications

    ~15s
In the app settings, turn on Cycle Complete alerts so your phone buzzes when laundry is done. Also turn on Error Alerts to get warnings about clogged filters or drain issues.

Smart washers and dryers connect to Wi-Fi and talk to a phone app so you know when the load is done without walking to the laundry room. You can also start or pause a cycle from your phone, download specialty cycles, and get alerts if something goes wrong.

Setup is similar to other smart appliances: download the brand's app (SmartThings, LG ThinQ, SmartHQ, Whirlpool), put the machine in pairing mode, and connect it to Wi-Fi through the app.
