How to Set Up a Brand New iPhone

Just got a new iPhone? Follow these steps to get it ready to use in about 15 minutes.

    1

Turn it on and choose your language

    ~15s
Press and hold the side button until you see "Hello" in different languages. Swipe up and choose your language and country. If you have a previous iPhone nearby, you can use Quick Start to transfer everything automatically.
    2

    Connect to WiFi

    ~15s
Select your home WiFi network and enter the password. If you do not know your WiFi password, it is usually on a sticker on the bottom or back of your router.
    3

Set up Face ID or Touch ID

    ~20s
Follow the on-screen instructions to set up face recognition (Face ID) or fingerprint (Touch ID). This lets you unlock your phone and approve purchases securely. You will also create a 6-digit passcode as a backup.

    Quick Tip

Set up Face ID even if it seems complicated. It makes unlocking your phone and paying for things much faster and more secure.

    4

Sign in with your Apple ID

    ~15s
Enter your Apple ID email and password. If you do not have one, tap "Don't have an Apple ID or forgot it?" to create one. Your Apple ID connects all Apple services: iCloud, App Store, iMessage, and FaceTime.
    5

    Customize your settings

    ~20s
The setup wizard will ask about: Siri (voice assistant — recommended to turn on), Location Services (recommended for maps and weather), Screen Time (optional parental controls), and iCloud Backup (strongly recommended — turn it on to protect your photos and data).

    Quick Tip

Turn on Automatic Updates: Settings, General, Software Update, Automatic Updates. This keeps your phone secure without you having to remember.

    6

    Download your essential apps

    ~15s
Open the App Store (blue icon with an A). Search for and download apps you need: your bank app, email app, video calling (FaceTime is already installed, Zoom if needed), social media, and any health apps your doctor recommends.
