How to Order Groceries with Instacart

Get groceries delivered from your favorite local stores without leaving home.

Download and sign up

Download Instacart from the App Store or Google Play. Create an account and enter your delivery address. Instacart will show you which stores deliver to your area (Costco, Kroger, Safeway, Publix, and many more).

Choose your store and shop

Tap a store to start shopping. Browse by category (produce, dairy, meat) or use the search bar to find specific items. Tap an item to add it to your cart. You can adjust quantities and see the price per item.

Quick Tip

Add "replacement preferences" for each item. If your chicken brand is out of stock, do you want a similar brand or no replacement? This saves back-and-forth with your shopper.

Schedule your delivery

When ready, go to your cart. Choose a delivery window: same day (sometimes within an hour), tomorrow, or schedule for later in the week. Earlier time slots tend to have lower fees.

Communicate with your shopper

After placing your order, a personal shopper at the store picks your items. They may message you through the app about substitutions. You can approve replacements, choose a different item, or skip it entirely. They will also send a photo of your items at checkout.

Receive your delivery

The app tracks your shopper in real-time. You will be notified when they are on the way. They will leave groceries at your door or hand-deliver them. Check the order for accuracy and rate your experience in the app.
