How to Edit Photos with Snapseed on iPhone or Android

Snapseed is a free Google app that lets you improve your photos with brightness, contrast, crop, and a healing brush — no experience needed.

On iPhone, open the App Store and search for "Snapseed." On Android, open the Google Play Store and search for "Snapseed." Download the free app by Google LLC. Once installed, tap Open. The app will ask permission to access your photos — tap Allow.

Open the photo you want to edit

Tap the big plus sign or tap anywhere on the gray area to open your photo library. Browse to the photo you want to edit and tap it. The photo will open in the editor. Your original is never deleted or changed — Snapseed works on a copy.

Adjust brightness and contrast with Tune Image

At the bottom, tap "Tools," then tap "Tune Image." Swipe up or down on your photo to see the list of adjustments: Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Ambiance, Highlights, Shadows, and Warmth. Tap one to select it, then swipe left on the photo to decrease it or right to increase it. The number at the bottom shows your current setting. Tap the checkmark when done.

Warning

Start with small adjustments. Moving the slider more than 30 points in either direction often makes a photo look unnatural.

Crop your photo to improve the framing

Tap "Tools" then "Crop." Drag the corner or edge handles to trim the photo. You can tap the icon that looks like overlapping rectangles to pick a standard size like Square, 4x3, or 16x9. When the framing looks right, tap the checkmark.

Erase distractions with the Healing brush

Tap "Tools" then "Healing." Use your finger to paint over the object you want to remove — a piece of trash, a stranger in the background, a date stamp. Snapseed will fill in the area with matching background texture. It works best on simple backgrounds like grass, sky, or pavement.

Quick Tip

Zoom in by pinching outward with two fingers before painting. This gives you more control on small details.

Save your edited photo

When you're happy with all your edits, tap the blue "Export" button in the bottom right corner. Choose "Save" to save a copy to your camera roll, or "Export" to choose a specific folder. Your original photo stays untouched in your library.

Snapseed is a free photo editing app made by Google. It works on both iPhone and Android and gives you powerful tools to improve your photos without needing any design skills. Whether you want to brighten a dark photo, crop out a distraction, or fix a blemish, Snapseed makes it approachable.

When you open a photo in Snapseed, you see three tabs at the bottom: Photos, Looks, and Tools. "Looks" are one-tap filter presets that change the overall style of a photo instantly. "Tools" is where the real editing power lives. It has over a dozen individual tools you can use one at a time.

The four most useful tools for everyday photos are:

Tune Image

— This is your brightness, contrast, and color control panel. Tap "Tune Image" under Tools, then swipe up or down on the screen to select which property you want to adjust (brightness, contrast, saturation, shadows, highlights). Once you've selected one, swipe left or right to make it weaker or stronger. A yellow bar at the bottom shows you the current value.

Crop

— Tap "Crop" under Tools to trim the edges of a photo. Drag the corner handles to frame the shot the way you want it. You can also tap the aspect ratio button to choose common sizes like square (for Instagram) or 4x6 (for printing).

Healing

— This tool lets you erase unwanted objects from a photo. Tap "Healing" under Tools, then paint with your finger over the thing you want to remove — a trash can in the background, a power line, a stray arm. Snapseed fills in the gap using the surrounding area. It works best on simple backgrounds.

Details (Sharpen)

— If a photo looks a little blurry or soft, tap "Details" and use the Sharpening slider to add crispness back.

When you're done editing, tap the checkmark, then tap the blue Export button in the bottom right to save your edited photo back to your camera roll. Your original is never changed — Snapseed always keeps it safe.
