Charge the headphones before first use

    ~23s
Remove the headphones from the box and locate the USB-C cable included in the packaging. Plug the USB-C end into the headphones (the port is on the bottom of the left earcup) and the other end into a USB charger. A full charge takes about 3.5 hours and is showed by the charge light turning off. You can use the headphones while charging, though the cable limits mobility.
    2

Pair with your phone via Bluetooth

    ~37s
With the headphones powered off, press and hold the power button (on the left earcup) for 7 seconds until you hear "Bluetooth pairing" and the blue light begins flashing rapidly. On your phone, open Settings, go to Bluetooth, and turn it on. Your phone will search for nearby devices — tap "WH-1000XM5" when it appears in the list. You will hear a confirmation chime when pairing is complete. Future connections happen automatically when the headphones power on near your paired phone.

    Quick Tip

The WH-1000XM5 can remember up to 10 paired devices. If your headphones automatically connect to the wrong device, turn Bluetooth off on that device temporarily so the headphones connect to the one you want.

    3

    Learn the touch controls

    ~25s
The right earcup is a touch-sensitive surface. Swipe forward or backward to skip tracks. Swipe up or down to adjust volume. Tap once to pause or play. Double-tap to fast-forward slightly in a track. Triple-tap to rewind. These gestures work consistently once you develop muscle memory, though they can feel unfamiliar at first. You can also tap the NC/Ambient button (a small physical button on the left earcup) to toggle between noise cancellation and ambient sound modes.
    4

Download the Sony Headphones Connect app

    ~36s
Search for "Sony Headphones Connect" in the App Store or Google Play and download the free app. Open it with your headphones connected and you will see a dashboard with your battery level, current noise cancellation setting, and equalizer. Tap "Sound" to access the equalizer and choose a preset or create your own. Tap "Noise Canceling/Ambient Mode" to manually slide the level from full cancellation to full ambient passthrough rather than using the fixed toggle button.

    Quick Tip

The DSEE Extreme setting in the app enhances compressed audio from streaming services to sound closer to the original studio recording. Turn it on under Sound settings for a noticeable improvement when streaming music.

    5

    Use Speak-to-Chat for hands-free conversations

    ~29s
Speak-to-Chat activates automatically when the headphones detect you speaking — no button press needed. The music pauses, ambient sound turns on, and you can talk normally. When you stop speaking, there is a brief pause and then your music resumes. If Speak-to-Chat triggers too often or not enough, adjust its sensitivity in the Sony app under Speak-to-Chat settings. You can also disable the feature entirely if you prefer manual control.

    Warning

Speak-to-Chat activates based on voice detection, not all sounds. Loud coughing or humming to yourself may sometimes trigger it unexpectedly.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 are widely regarded as one of the best pairs of noise-canceling headphones on the market. They offer deep, effective noise cancellation, rich sound quality, very long battery life (up to 30 hours), and a comfortable design suitable for all-day wear. Setting them up takes only a few minutes, and once you learn the touch controls and the Sony Headphones Connect app, you will have fine-grained control over how they sound and behave.

Sony's noise cancellation technology is called HD Noise Canceling Processor QN1. Unlike the fixed noise cancellation found in budget headphones, the WH-1000XM5 automatically adjusts cancellation strength based on your environment and the shape of your ear. The result is a listening experience where external sound — airplane cabin noise, office HVAC, street traffic — is reduced to near silence.

The headphones also include a feature called Speak-to-Chat. When the headphones detect you beginning to talk, they automatically pause your music and activate ambient sound mode so you can have a conversation without removing them. When you stop talking, the music resumes after about 30 seconds. This works surprisingly well in practice and saves you from constantly pausing music manually.

The Sony Headphones Connect app (free, available for iPhone and Android) unlocks additional features: a customizable equalizer, the ability to adjust noise cancellation level manually, DSEE Extreme audio upscaling (which enhances compressed streaming audio), and the ability to create location-based rules. For example, you can set the headphones to automatically switch to ambient sound mode when you are at a specific address like your gym or workplace.

Battery life on the WH-1000XM5 is excellent. A full charge lasts about 30 hours with noise cancellation active. A 3-minute quick charge gives you about 3 hours of listening. The headphones charge via USB-C. And they can also be used with the included 3.5mm audio cable when the battery is completely dead.

The headphones come in two colors — black and platinum silver — and include a compact carrying case. The case is rigid and provides good protection when traveling.
