Download Strava and create an account

    ~18s
Search for "Strava" in the App Store or Google Play and install the free app. Open it and create a free account with your email address. Enter your basic info (name, age, weight) so the app can calculate calorie estimates and set relevant benchmarks. Weight is optional if you'd rather not provide it.
    2

Select your activity and start recording

    ~33s
From the Strava home screen, tap the orange "Record" button (the stopwatch icon at the bottom). Choose your activity type: Run, Walk, Ride, Hike, or any of the other options. Make sure your phone's GPS has locked onto your location — the screen should show your current location on a map. Tap "Start" when you're ready to begin.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Give the GPS a moment to find your location before you start moving. Starting while GPS is still searching can cause the first few seconds of your route to be inaccurate. You'll see a "GPS Connected" indicator when it's ready.

    3

Keep your phone with you during the activity

    ~19s
Carry your phone in your pocket, an armband, or a running belt throughout the activity. Strava records your route in the background — you don't need to keep the app open on screen. Your phone's screen can lock normally to save battery. The recording continues until you return to the app and tap "Stop."
    4

    Save and review your activity

    ~17s
When you finish, tap "Stop" and then "Save." Strava displays your activity summary: distance, moving time, average pace, elevation gain, and a map of your route. If you set any personal records, they're highlighted here. Scroll down to see a breakdown of your pace by mile or kilometer.
    5

    Follow friends and give kudos

    ~20s
Tap the search icon and find friends by name or email. Follow them to see their activities in your Strava feed. When a friend completes a run or ride, tap the thumbs-up icon to give them kudos — it's a small gesture that many people find genuinely encouraging. You can also leave a short comment on any activity.

Strava is one of the most popular fitness tracking apps in the world, used by everyone from casual walkers to professional marathon runners. At its core, Strava does something very useful: it uses your phone's GPS to record exactly where you go, how far you travel, how long it takes, and how your pace changes throughout the activity. When you finish, you get a detailed map of your route, your stats, and a personal record if you beat your previous best.

Strava works for running, walking, hiking, cycling, swimming, and dozens of other activity types. You don't need any special equipment beyond your phone. The app runs in the background while you're active and tracks everything automatically.

One of Strava's most motivating features is the way it celebrates achievements. After a run, if you set a personal best for a mile or a kilometer, Strava flags it with a trophy symbol. If you run a particular route faster than you've ever run it before, Strava gives you a "Course Record." These small recognitions feel genuinely rewarding and give you concrete evidence that you're improving.

The social side of Strava — following friends, giving "kudos" (Strava's version of a like), and leaving encouraging comments — is optional but popular. Many people find that knowing their activity will show up for friends keeps them more consistent. If you prefer privacy, Strava lets you set activities to private or hide your location entirely.

Strava's free tier includes unlimited activity recording, route mapping, and performance data. The Strava Subscription (around $11.99 per month or $79.99 per year) unlocks training analysis, personalized coaching features, segment leaderboards, and advanced goal-setting tools. The free tier is more than enough for most recreational users.
