Amazon Flex is Amazon's program for independent delivery drivers who use their own vehicles to deliver Amazon packages directly to customers' homes. Unlike DoorDash, which involves restaurant food, Amazon Flex drivers pick up pre-packaged delivery batches from Amazon delivery stations, warehouses, or Whole Foods stores and bring them to the addresses printed on each label.

Amazon Flex pays between $18 and $25 per hour depending on your market and the type of delivery block. The rate is fixed and displayed before you accept a block — there's no tipping mechanism, but the hourly rate is set at a level that's generally competitive with other gig delivery work.

Work on Amazon Flex is organized into "blocks" — scheduled time slots typically two to four hours long. You browse available blocks in the Flex app (which updates frequently throughout the day) and claim the ones that fit your schedule. Blocks during peak times like the holiday season, evenings, and weekends are in higher demand and go quickly.

To qualify for Amazon Flex, you must be at least 21 years old, have a valid US driver's license, own or have regular access to a mid-size or larger vehicle (a sedan, SUV, minivan, or truck — small compact cars may not hold all packages in a block), pass a background check, and have a smartphone running a compatible version of iOS or Android.

It's worth keeping a car charger for your phone since the Flex app and navigation use significant battery.

Amazon Flex drivers are paid every Tuesday and Friday via direct deposit.
