How to Turn On Do Not Disturb at Night

Schedule your phone to silence notifications automatically at bedtime so you get uninterrupted sleep.

    1

    iPhone: Set up Sleep Focus

    ~15s
Settings then Focus then Sleep then "Add Schedule." Set your bedtime and wake-up time. Choose which days it applies.
    2

    Android: Create a DND schedule

    ~15s
Settings then Sound then Do Not Disturb then Schedules, then add a "Sleeping" schedule. Set start and end times.
    3

    Allow important contacts through

    ~15s
iPhone: Focus then Sleep then People, then add emergency contacts. Android: Do Not Disturb then People then Calls from then Starred contacts.
    4

    Enable repeated callers

    ~15s
Turn on "Allow Repeated Calls" so if someone calls twice within 3 minutes, the second call rings through — useful for real emergencies.
    5

    Verify alarms still work

    ~15s
Set a test alarm to confirm it rings during Do Not Disturb. Both iPhone and Android let alarms through — you will not oversleep.
    6

    Samsung bonus: Use Bedtime mode

    ~15s
Open the Clock app then Bedtime tab then set your sleep schedule. This adds screen dimming and grayscale on top of Do Not Disturb for better sleep habits.

Nothing ruins a good night of sleep like your phone buzzing at midnight with a promotional email or a group chat message. Scheduling Do Not Disturb to turn on automatically at bedtime and off in the morning means you never have to think about it — your phone goes quiet when you do.

On iPhone: Apple calls this "Sleep Focus" and it is part of the Focus system. Go to Settings then Focus then Sleep. Tap "Add Schedule" and set the times you want it active (for example, 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM). You can set it for every day or only certain days of the week. While Sleep Focus is on, notifications are silenced, the Lock Screen dims, and only the people you allow can reach you.

To allow important callers through: tap "People" in the Sleep Focus settings and add contacts who can still call you during sleep hours (your spouse, children, or other emergency contacts). You can also enable "Allow Repeated Calls" — if someone calls twice within three minutes, the second call comes through.

On Android: Go to Settings then Sound then Do Not Disturb then Schedules. Tap "Add more" or the plus sign to create a new schedule. Many Android phones have a built-in "Sleeping" schedule you can customize. Set your start time (bedtime) and end time (wake-up time), and choose which days it applies.

Samsung phones: Settings then Notifications then Do not disturb then "Turn on as scheduled." Set your times. You can also use Samsung's "Bedtime" mode in the Clock app, which adds screen dimming and grayscale on top of silencing notifications.

On Android, you can set exceptions for calls from specific contacts: Settings then Sound then Do Not Disturb then People then "Calls from" then choose "Starred contacts" or "Contacts." Add your important people to your Starred contacts by opening their contact card and tapping the star icon.

Your alarm clock still works normally during Do Not Disturb on both iPhone and Android. You will not oversleep because of this setting — alarms always ring regardless.
