    How to Turn On Subtitles and Captions on Netflix

    Turn on subtitles while watching on a TV

    Press any button on your TV remote to show the playback controls at the bottom of the screen. Look for a speech bubble icon, a "CC" icon, or a "Subtitles & Audio" option. Select it, then choose "English" (or your preferred language) from the list of subtitle options.

    Turn on subtitles on a computer, phone, or tablet

    On a computer, click anywhere on the screen to show the playback controls, then click the speech bubble icon in the bottom right corner and choose a subtitle language. On a phone or tablet, tap the screen to show controls, then tap the speech bubble icon or the "Audio & Subtitles" button and pick your language.

    Make subtitles larger and easier to read

    You can change how subtitles look to make them more readable. On a TV, go to Netflix Settings, then Subtitle Appearance. On a phone, open the Netflix app, tap More (the three-line menu), then Subtitle Appearance. You can change the font size, color, and background to whatever is most comfortable for your eyes.

    A yellow or white font on a black background is often the easiest combination to read, especially in bright rooms.

    Choose subtitles designed for the deaf and hard-of-hearing

    When selecting subtitles, look for options labeled "English [CC]" or "English [SDH]." These include descriptions of important sounds and music (like "door slams" or "suspenseful music"), not only the spoken words. This gives you a fuller understanding of what is happening in the show.
