Uber is one of the most widely used ride services in the United States. Instead of hailing a cab or calling a dispatcher, you request a ride through an app on your phone, and a nearby driver comes to pick you up. Payment happens automatically — no need to carry cash or hand over a card at the end of the ride.
Before your first trip, download the Uber app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android). Open it and create a free account using your email address or phone number. Once you are logged in, add a payment method — a debit card, credit card, or PayPal account all work. If you prefer not to link a card, you can buy Uber Cash gift cards at retail stores and add the balance to your account instead.
When you are ready to request a ride, the app will automatically detect your location. Confirm your pickup spot on the map, then type in where you want to go. The app will show you several options: uberX is the standard and most affordable choice, while Uber Comfort offers newer cars with extra legroom. You will see the estimated price and arrival time before you confirm.
After you tap "Request," a nearby driver accepts your trip. You can watch your driver's car move toward you on a live map and see their name, photo, license plate, and car color — so you know exactly who to look for. Wait at the address you selected and watch for the matching vehicle.
When you arrive at your destination, the fare is charged automatically to your saved payment method. The app will then prompt you to rate your driver from one to five stars — this helps keep the service reliable for everyone. If you ever feel unsafe, Uber has an in-app emergency button that connects directly to 911 and shares your location with emergency services. You can also share your ride status with a trusted contact so someone always knows where you are.
