Lyft is a ride service that works a lot like Uber — you use an app on your phone to request a nearby driver, track the ride in real time, and pay automatically when you arrive. It operates in most major US cities and many smaller towns, making it a practical option whether you need a ride to a doctor's appointment, the airport, or the grocery store.
To get started, download the Lyft app for free from the App Store on iPhone or the Google Play Store on Android. You will create an account with your phone number or email, then verify your identity with a code sent by text. Once inside the app, go to the Payment section and add a credit card, debit card, or PayPal. If you prefer not to use a card, you can purchase Lyft Gift Cards at many retail stores and add that balance to your account as Lyft Cash.
Requesting a ride works the same way every time. The app detects your location automatically, so you confirm your pickup spot on the map, then enter your destination. You will see two main options: Lyft is the standard ride at the most affordable price, while Lyft XL fits up to six passengers and is great for groups or when you have a lot of luggage. The app shows the estimated fare and how many minutes away your driver is before you confirm anything.
One of Lyft's most reassuring features is driver verification. Every driver's profile shows their name, photo, and the exact car they are driving — including the color and license plate. Before you get in, match those details to what the app shows. You can also tap a button to call or text your driver directly through the app if you need to give them special directions.
When the trip ends, payment happens automatically. You can leave a tip inside the app, and you will be asked to rate the driver. Lyft also includes a safety feature called Smart Trip Check-In, which will check in with you during longer trips if anything seems unusual. You can share your live ride status with a family member or friend so someone you trust always knows where you are.
