    Download and open Waze

    ~20s
Search for "Waze Navigation & Live Traffic" in the App Store or Google Play Store and install the free app. Open it and allow location access when prompted — Waze needs your location to give accurate directions.

    Quick Tip

You can use Waze without creating an account, but signing in with a free Google account lets you save your home and work addresses.

    2

Save your home and work addresses

    ~15s
Tap the search bar, then tap "Home" or "Work" to add those addresses. This makes it faster to start your most common trips. You can also save frequently visited places like a doctor's office or family member's home.
    3

    Start navigation

    ~21s
Tap the search bar and type where you want to go. Waze will suggest a destination — tap on it to see the route. Review the estimated time and tap "Go" to start turn-by-turn directions. The voice guide will tell you when to turn.

    Quick Tip

If Waze suggests a route you don't like, tap the three dots next to the route to see alternate options.

    4

    Understand the road alerts

    ~18s
As you drive, colored icons appear on the map. A police badge means law enforcement was spotted nearby. A car icon means a crash was reported. A cone means road construction. A hazard triangle means a road hazard like debris or a pothole. These all come from other drivers and update in real time.
    5

    Report a hazard yourself

    ~19s
If you spot something — a crash, bad traffic, police, or a hazard — tap the orange plus button on the right side of the screen. Select the type of report. This takes about two seconds and warns drivers behind you automatically.

    Warning

Only report hazards when safely stopped at a red light or pulled over. Never tap while moving.

    6

    Connect to your car's display

    ~15s
If your car supports Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, plug in your phone with a USB cable (or connect wirelessly on newer cars). Waze will appear on your dashboard screen automatically, making it safer and easier to follow directions without touching your phone.

Waze is a free GPS navigation app that does more than show you how to get somewhere — it also warns you about traffic jams, accidents, road construction, and speed cameras in real time. That information comes from other Waze drivers on the same roads who report what they see, making it especially useful during rush hour or when there is unexpected trouble ahead.

Waze is available on both iPhone and Android. Download it for free from the App Store or Google Play Store. No account is required to use basic navigation, but creating a free account lets you save your home and work addresses so you can reach them in one tap.

To get directions, tap the search bar at the bottom of the screen and type your destination — a business name, address, or even a contact from your phone. Waze calculates the fastest route based on current traffic conditions and starts turn-by-turn voice directions automatically. The voice prompts are clear and timely, so you can keep your eyes on the road.

While you are driving, Waze shows icons on the map for things drivers ahead have reported: a car icon means there is a crash, a cone means road work, a red car icon means heavy traffic, and a police badge icon means other drivers spotted law enforcement nearby. You do not have to interact with these alerts — they appear automatically as you approach.

If you see something yourself, you can report it by tapping the orange plus button on the right side of the screen. This takes only a second and helps other drivers behind you.

For frequent destinations, add your home and work addresses in Settings under "My Places." This saves time every time you open the app. If you drive with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, Waze works with both — plug in or connect wirelessly and the app appears on your car's dashboard screen.

Waze works best with a strong cellular signal since it downloads live traffic data constantly. If you are driving somewhere with spotty coverage, Google Maps or Apple Maps may be more reliable since they can store offline maps.
