    Buy an AirTag and a pet-safe holder

    AirTags cost about $29 each at any Apple store or Amazon. Buy a dedicated AirTag pet collar holder (about $10) — the standard keychain holder is not designed to survive a dog shaking or chewing.

    Pair the AirTag with your iPhone

    Pull the plastic tab on the AirTag to start it. Hold it near your iPhone. A pop-up asks you to name it — pick something like "Buddy's Collar" — and tap Continue.

    Attach it securely to the collar

    Slide the AirTag into the pet-safe holder and attach the holder to the collar. Give it a tug to make sure it will not fall off when your pet runs or scratches.

    Find your pet in the Find My app

    Open the Find My app on your iPhone and tap the Items tab. You will see your pet's name with its last-known location on a map. Tap "Play Sound" to make the AirTag beep if you are nearby.

    Know the limits

    AirTags need other iPhones nearby to update their location, so they are less helpful in rural areas. For outdoor cats or dogs that roam, a dedicated GPS collar like Fi or Tractive works better because it uses cell networks.
